Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the common thread here? "Fast Car", by Tracy Chapman, "Ophelia", by Natalie Merchant, "Icicle", by Tori Amos.

Answer: The performers are all female

Tracy Chapman was born on March 30, 1964 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Natalie Merchant was on October 26, 1963 in Jamestown, New York.
Tori Amos was born on August 22, 1963 in Newton, North Carolina.
There's almost another link there !
2. What is the common thread here? "She Makes My Day", by Robert Palmer, "Sunshine Superman", by Donovan, "Tears In Heaven", by Eric Clapton

Answer: The performers are all from the UK

The song "Tears in Heaven" is a tribute to Eric Clapton's son, Conor, who died after falling from a window to his death when he was 5.
3. What is the common thread here? "Pretty Woman", by Roy Orbison, "The Sounds Of Silence", by Simon and Garfunkel, "A Hard Day's Night" by The Beatles.

Answer: The songs were all released in 1964

"A Hard Day's Night", the title song from their movie of the same name, was the only song they did not perform in the movie, owing to the fact it was not recorded until a week before the filming ended and the film's opening sequence had also already been filmed.
4. What is the common thread here? "Nobody Does It Better", by Carly Simon, "All Time High", by Rita Coolidge, "We Have All the Time in the World", by Louis Armstrong

Answer: The songs were all theme music for James Bond movies

"We Have All the Time in the World" was the last song recorded by Louis Armstrong before his death.
5. What is the common thread here? "Don't Worry, Be Happy", by Bobby McFerrin, "Rave On", by John Cougar Mellencamp, "Wild Again", by Starship

Answer: They were all from the soundtrack of the movie " Cocktail "

The movie "Cocktail", famous for making ordinary people think that if they have a martini shaker, an Australian accent, and a Beach Boys record, they are cool. Also not one of my personal favourite movies for the above reason.
6. What is the common thread here? "Fanfare For The Common Man", by Copland, "Ride Of The Valkyries", by Wagner, "Can Can", by Offenbach

Answer: These songs have been used in TV commercials

Aaron Copland was born in New York City in 1900 and died in 1990.
Richard Wagner was born in Leizpig, Germany, in 1813, and died in 1883. Jacques Offenbach lived from 1819 until 1880. His real name was actually Jacob Eberst, but his father changed the family name after he left his home town of Offenbach-Am-Main, and settled in Cologne.
7. What is the common thread here? "Imagine", by John Lennon, "Still Crazy After All These Years", by Paul Simon, "Never Gonna Give You Up", by Rick Astley.

Answer: Each performer's surname contains two vowels (not sometimes)

Does anyone remember Rick Astley?
8. What is the common thread here? "Eagle Rock", by Daddy Cool, "Touch of Paradise", by John Farnham, "Bed Of Nails", by Ross Wilson

Answer: Each song was written by Ross Wilson

Interestingly enough, Ross Wilson is not as well known as he should be. He's a magnificent song writer and singer who is probably best remembered for his role as lead singer of "Daddy Cool".
9. What is the common thread here? "Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes", by Paul Simon, "Crash Into Me", by Dave Matthews Band, "Eleanor Rigby", by The Beatles

Answer: Each song is from an album whose title is only one word

"Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes" is from the album "Graceland",
"Crash into me" is from the album "Crash", and "Eleanor Rigby" is from the album "Revolver".
10. What is the common thread here? "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight", by R.E.M., "I Need You Tonight", by INXS, "Stars", by Simply Red

Answer: Each group's lead singer's first name is Michael

R.E.M.'s frontman is Michael Stipe, INXS's former frontman was Michael Hutchence, and Simply Red's frontman is Michael Hucknall.
