Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This lady is indisputably one of the great jazz vocalists, and may be best known for singing the anti-lynching song "Strange Fruit". Who is she?

Answer: Billie Holiday

I think Billie recorded her best stuff in the late 1930s and very early 1940s. While "Strange Fruit" is probably her best known song, I love her version of "What A Little Moonlight Can Do".
2. This woman was considered by many to be the "first lady of jazz." This woman's vocal stylings helped put scat on the map, and her version of "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" was a big hit back in 1938. Who is she?

Answer: Ella Fitzgerald

Ella was an amazing talent, and she got her first break by winning a talent contest at the Apollo theater. Eventually she ended up in Chick Webb's band, and the rest is history.
3. What do you mean there are no good male jazz singers anymore? This guy's voice sounds like it is coming from a huge oak barrel, which is fitting because his name is?

Answer: Kevin Mahogany

Mahogany has a fine set of pipes, as demonstrated on his 1995 album "You Got What It Takes." He also recorded some good stuff with the late, great drummer Elvin Jones.
4. This guy's voice was deep, powerful and distinct. Spending years as part of Count Basie's Orchestra, some of his favorite tunes included "Every Day I Have The Blues" and "Goin' To Chicago". Who was this talented singer?

Answer: Joe Williams

Williams had the most amazing voice. It was deeper than the Grand Canyon, and just jam-packed with emotion. If you can find some of the stuff he recorded with Basie, check it out. I particularly like his version of Johnny Mercer's "Too Marvelous For Words".
5. This woman may have had the most perfect set of pipes in history. Perhaps her most famous tune is the version of "Lullaby In Birdland" she recorded with trumpeter Clifford Brown in 1954. Who is she?

Answer: Sarah Vaughan

Sarah Vaughan's voice was truly divine. Her range and physical ability were staggering. The album she recorded with Brown, titled "Sarah Vaughan", is well worth getting. Brilliant.
6. Who was known as The Velvet Fog?

Answer: Mel Torme

Mel Torme was a real talent. Not only a gifted singer, and sometime comedian, he was a fine drummer and co-wrote one of the most popular songs of all time - "The Christmas Song" (you know, the chestnuts roasting on an open fire song).
7. What male singer recorded a brilliant duet album with John Coltrane in 1963? Songs on the album include "Lush Life" and "They Say It's Wonderful".

Answer: Johnny Hartman

For my money, "John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman" is a must-own album. Hartman's vocals are smooth as silk, and Coltrane's playing is at its finest. One of the top 100 jazz albums of all-time, in my opinion.
8. This lovely lady is a wonderful pianist, in addition to being one of today's greatest female jazz vocalists. Who is this lady, who married singer Elvis Costello?

Answer: Diana Krall

Krall does a wonderful job of breathing life into old jazz standards. I'm also a big fan of Elvis Costello, can you imagine what their kids will be like?
9. This bop artist with the bass voice was born and died in Pittsburgh, PA. Who was this singer/bandleader, known as Mr. B?

Answer: Billy Eckstine

Billy Eckstine had hits including "Jelly Jelly" and "Everything I Have Is Yours", but my favorite is his version of "Laura". Man, this guy could sing.
10. This female singer was one of the great vocalists of the swing era, as a regular at the famous Cotton Club and with Duke Ellington's band. Who is she?

Answer: Ivie Anderson

Sadly, she passed away in 1949 and recorded very little solo work. Whenever her name comes up in jazz interviews and documentaries, those that knew her all say she was a real class act. Her numbers with Ellington, such as "Stormy Weather" and "It Don't Mean A Thing", are classics.
