Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The famous Bill Evans Trio's live recording (with Scott Lafaro) that produced "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" and "Waltz for Debby" was recorded in what year?

Answer: 1961

Scott Lafaro died a little over a week after these recordings were made, sending the already-depressed Bill Evans over the edge. He didn't form a new trio for some time.
2. What is the best-selling jazz album of all time?

Answer: Kind of Blue

It still sells 5,000 copies a week!
3. There have been three famous jazz musicians with the name Bill Evans. Two of them (piano and sax) kept their name. What did the third Bill Evans change his name to?

Answer: Yusef Lateef

He is a fine solo musician who also has played with Cannonball Adderley, Charles Mingus, Roy Eldridge, and Dizzy Gillespie. There is some debate on Lateef's real name, it may have been Bill Huddleston. He did go by the name "Bill Evans" though.
4. By what nickname was Ben Webster known?

Answer: The Brute

Even though he was one of the most tender tenor players of all time, he had a temper, and just might punch someone in the face if the mood struck him. He was also supposedly very strong and fast.
5. Although he made his fame and fortune in New York City, where was Duke Ellington born and raised?

Answer: Washington, DC

His first band (not a big band) was known as the Washingtonians. There is both a bridge and a school of performing arts named after him in DC.
6. Paul Desmond, the alto player who played in Dave Brubeck's band for many years, had an agreement with his boss that prevented him from doing what on any of his solo albums?

Answer: Have a piano player on his albums

It's impossible to imagine why Paul would make this agreement.
7. In the late 50s-early 60s, Art Blakey's Jazz messengers (with Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merritt) had a host of tenor players who sat in, with some of them only sticking around for an album or two. Which of the following tenor players was NEVER in the Jazz Messengers?

Answer: Joe Henderson

Art Blakey was one of the greatest talent scouts of all time, spotting young talent, then teaching them the ropes, and sending them into the jazz world as leaders.
8. Which jazz movie starred a host of great jazz musicians, including Dexter Gordon, Herbie Hancock, Bobby Hutcherson, John McLaughlin, and Wayne Shorter?

Answer: Round Midnight

Dexter Gordon had the lead in this film, playing an ex-pat jazz musician living in Paris, a role that seemed to made for him (and probably was). He gave a damn fine performance.
9. The late, great bass player Ray Brown was once married to which of the following jazz singers?

Answer: Ella Fitzgerald

He recently died at the age of 75.
10. Which of the following jazz labels did Lester Koenig found?

Answer: Contemporary

Contemporary was a great LA-based label, who recorded such musicians as Art Pepper, Hampton Hawes, and Shelley Manne.
