Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of John's nature-loving songs uplifts you as he sings, "If I had a day that I could give you, I'd give to you a day just like today"?

Answer: Sunshine on My Shoulders

"Sunshine on My Shoulders" was the background music for the 1973 movie, "Sunshine".
2. Clap your hands and sing along when you hear these lyrics, "We'd have chicken pie and country ham and homemade butter on the bread!"

Answer: Grandma's Feather Bed

The first time I heard this song was on "An Evening with John Denver," and I laughed out loud at the "Maybe I'd better reconsider about the gal down the road..." add-in to it.
3. Some of my fave JD songs were his love songs. This comes from a heartbreaker... "Love is why I came here in the first place, Love is now the reason I must go."

Answer: Seasons of the Heart

First introduced on the "Seasons of the Heart" cd, this is, in my opinion, one of JD's most beautiful songs.
4. A John Denver lyric that has found its way into many wedding ceremonies, "And in those times of trouble when you are most alone, The memory of love will bring you home."

Answer: Perhaps Love

Originally written to entice Placido Domingo to sing one of his lyrics, this was performed as a duet between the two men. When I get married, this will be sung as my wedding song going down the aisle.
5. The rolling of the sea, and call of ship bells begins the song in which this beautiful lyric appears, "For though we are strangers in your silent world, To live on the land we must learn from the sea."

Answer: Calypso

John Denver took a voyage with Jacques Cousteau in the 1970's, sailing on the magnificent exploration vessel, "Calypso." This song is his tribute to the works of Cousteau and his crew.
6. I love the song, but everytime I look at the lyrics written out, I can't help but think of "The Beverly Hillbillies." However, this lyric is far from Jed and family, "Come and listen to the story of a journey once begun."

Answer: It Amazes Me

This is such an uplifting song. I never considered it to be atypical of JD's other works, but nevertheless, I have it added to my personal list of favorites.
7. John's words echoed the need by those dependent on us for a voice, with the following lyrics, "Have you heard the song the humpback hears five hundred miles away, telling tales of ancient history of passages and home."

Answer: I Want to Live

"I Want to Live" was first introduced on the "I Want to Live" album. The song itself never hit the charts, but for those true JD fans, we knew it was one of his most heartfelt plea for ecology and world peace.
8. With his love of flight, many of John's songs took on a theme that included flight in one way or another. These lyrics typify that love, "On the road of experience, I'm trying to find my own way. Sometimes I wish that I could fly away."

Answer: Looking for Space

This song was indicative of JD's personal yearning to be part of the space program. His father was an Air Force pilot, JD picked up the love of flight from him. He was an avid supporter of the NASA program, and passed the NASA physical, where he was shortlisted for fly on the first citizens' trip on the Space Shuttle in 1986.

He received the NASA "Public Service Medal" which is normally given only to space-related engineers and designers, for his "helping to increase awareness of space exploration by the peoples of the world."
9. Early in his career, particularly after his marriage to Annie, the simple country boy came out, and his longing for time with his wife was easily recognizable. One such instance is in these lyrics, "I've forgot what it's like to be home, Can't remember what it's like to be home."

Answer: Starwood in Aspen

"Starwood in Aspen" refers to JD's mountain home, which he often referred to as his aerie. Few pictures of the home have appeared, as he kept it as his personal getaway with wife, Annie.
10. John's love for his adopted Colorado home is the backdrop for this powerful nature piece, "Come dance with the west wind and touch on the mountain tops. Sail o'er the canyons and up to the stars."

Answer: The Eagle and the Hawk

This song has fairly simple lyrics, but the music that goes with it, from the guitar duet to the soaring strings set background for imagining these magnicifent birds of prey in flight. The piece appears on JD's Greatest Hits album, and many other albums, as well.
