Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Frankie Goes To Hollywood
Answer: "Watching The Wildlife"
Frankie only released seven singles in their time together and had three UK number ones, a number two, a number four, a number 19 and then this, their final single which peaked at number 28. As with all of Frankie's singles, it was released as several different mixes, which included for this track "The Hotter Mix", "The Last Days Of Mankind Mix" and "The Condom Mix".
2. Stevie Wonder
Answer: "Love Light In Flight"
How do you follow a record like "I Just Called To Say I Love You", which went to number one in 19 different charts? By releasing a record that stalled at number 44 in the UK is maybe not the correct answer, but to be fair, any record would struggle to reach the dizzy heights of "I Just Called". Like its predecessor, "Love Light In Flight" was also from the hugely successful "Woman In Red" soundtrack.
3. The Human League
Answer: "Life On Your Own"
Many 80s top ten hits with "Don't You Want Me", "Mirror Man" "Love Action", "Open Your Heart", "Being Boiled" and "(Keep Feeling) Fascination" and then maybe Human League perhaps started to believe the music press hype about them, as they took over two months in 1984 just to program a drum machine for this track and then watched as it only reached number 16.
They did manage to score a couple more top ten hits, but by and large their time in the top 20 was over, although "Don't You Want Me" got to number 16 when re-released in 1995 and number 19 when re-released again in 2014.
4. New Order
Answer: "The Perfect Kiss"
New Order were never a chart topping band - even their best known hit, "Blue Monday" only got to number nine when originally released in 1984 - but to only reach number 46 with this track from the "Low-Life" album always seemed unjust. After all, in what other song can you hear a melodic croaking of frogs?
5. Adam Ant
Answer: "Desperate But Not Serious"
Adam Ant's first solo album in 1982, without The Ants, brought him a number one with "Goody Two Shoes" and this number 33 hit which began the sales decline of future releases. It made it seem that 1981 when he had two consecutive number ones, a number two and a number three, all with The Ants, was a long time ago.
6. Billy Joel
Answer: "All For Leyna"
Joel had minor success in the UK in the 70s with "Just The Way You Are" and "My Life" both breaking into the top 20, but "All For Leyna", his first single release of the 80s, bombed at number 40. From the same "Glass Houses" album, he did better with "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me" also in 1980, and then really hit the UK big time in 1983 with "Uptown Girl" and "Tell Her About It".
7. UB40
Answer: "I Won't Close My Eyes"
UB40's first five singles, released in 1980 and 1981, all went top 20 in UK but in 1982 they hit a lean spell with four consecutive releases failing to break into the top 20. This was the first of those four, peaking at number 32, but by 1983 they were back on top of their game with the global number one "Red Red Wine", a cover of a Neil Diamond track.
8. Musical Youth
Answer: "Sixteen"
A number one in 1982 with "Pass The Dutchie", a number six in 1983 with "Never Gonna Give You Up" and then this number 23 in 1984 before the hits dried up, but all in all not a bad run when you consider that when "Pass The Dutchie" hit number one, vocalist Dennis Seaton was the oldest member of the band, aged 15.
9. The Communards
Answer: "Disenchanted"
For a band that was so influential, it is quite surprising to learn that The Communards were together for only three years and released just eight singles and one remix. This 1986 single which reached number 29 was followed by the worldwide smash that was their cover version of Harold Melvin's "Don't Leave Me This Way".
10. Bucks Fizz
Answer: "London Town"
"London Town" was released in 1983 and reached just number 34, only two years after Bucks Fizz had hit number one and won the Eurovision Song Contest with "Making Your Mind Up". It was the first single by the band not to crack the top 20, and although it was never on a studio album, it was included on their "Greatest Hits" album, also of 1983.
