1. Where was Lionel Brockman Richie born?

Answer: Tuskegee, Alabama

Richie grew up on the campus of Tuskegee Institute. His grandfather's house was across the street from the home of the president of the institute. His family moved to Illinois, where he graduated from Joliet Township High School, East Campus, in Joliet. He then accepted a tennis scholarship back at Tuskegee Institute and later graduated with a major in economics.
2. Lionel Richie helped form one of the great soul groups towards the end of the 1960s while at the Tuskegee Institute. What was the name of this group?

Answer: The Commodores

Richie taught himself to play the piano by ear and really matured as a performer and composer at Tuskegee. The group was called the Mystics at first, but later became the Commodores. This name was picked by randomly choosing a word out of the dictionary.

The Commodores landed a series of club appearances and signed on with a manager, Benny Ashburn, who would stay with them until his death during Richie's solo years. They signed briefly to the Atlantic record label, but then they went to Motown.

During their marriage, Richie began a relationship with Diane Alexander in 1986. Lionel and Brenda divorced in August 9, 1993; they had been married 17 years.

"Endless Love" was the theme for the film of the same name starring Brooke Shields. It was a huge success, staying at the top spot of the US billboard charts for nine weeks.

It was later covered by Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey, amongst many other cover versions.

Answer: Breast cancer

Richie has said that his grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer in her 80s, but survived until she was 104 years old. He has stated that she was his enduring symbol of hope and his reason for becoming a breast cancer activist.
