Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Southern rockers, 38 Special, were trapped in emotion.

Answer: Caught Up in You

Released in 1982, "Caught Up in You" quickly became a staple of AOR (album oriented rock) stations and could often be heard in video arcades. It was the band's first number one single on the Billboard Top Tracks and a follow up to "Hold On Loosely".

Featured in the 1983 film "Spring Break" and in 2009 "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard", it remains one of the top 100 Songs of 1982 on Billboard's Year End Chart.
2. The duo Wham! didn't want to oversleep.

Answer: Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go

Wham! was George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. The title of the song came from a sign that Ridgeley put on his bedroom door reminding his Mum to wake him before she went to work. The sign said, "Don't forget to wake me up before you go go," with the last "go" mistakenly repeated. Released in 1984, the song became Wham!'s first American hit.

The song was featured in the 2000 film "Charlie's Angels" and in 2013 Blaine Anderson and Sam Evans, characters on the show "Glee", covered the song on the episode called "Guilty Pleasures".
3. In very few words the Silver Convention told us to rise and dance.

Answer: Get Up and Boogie

The German disco group released the song in 1976. Even with minimal lyrics, only six different words "Get up and boogie, that's right", it became a popular dance tune and experienced commercial success. (Apparently Silver Convention decided six word lyrics worked well for them following "Fly Robin Fly" in 1975).

It was number one in Canada on June 15, 1976, had three weeks at number two in the U.S in June 1976 and also peaked at number seven in the UK in May 1976. The album has since been released on iTunes in several countries.
4. We were invited to visit and amuse Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel (although Harley had a hidden agenda).

Answer: Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)

Steve Harley actually wrote the song in response to the original members of Cockney Rebel leaving. In the song, released in 1975, Harley accuses his former band mates of selling out and sings "You spoilt the game, no matter what you say, for only metal-what a bore." Harley has also stated "There are 120 cover versions but only The Wedding Present have done it differently. They did a punk version and made it kick. They understood the venom in the lyrics." Pretty strong words there, Steve!

On a lighter note, in a 1975 live appearance on the UK's "Top of the Pops", Harley forgot the words of the second and third verse. He quickly went into an impromptu lead break much to his own amusement, as well as the rest of the band!

The song has been featured in "The Full Monty" in 1997 and "Velvet Goldmine" in 1998. Duran Duran's version appeared on the soundtrack of the movie "Threesome" in 1994. It was also featured in UK ads for Marks & Spencer, as well as Furniture Village. At least the royalties must make Harley smile!
5. Although he was aging Springsteen still commanded a nocturnal army.

Answer: Growin' Up

"Growin' Up" was one of the songs that convinced Columbia Records to sign Springsteen. In 1972, what was supposed to be a short meeting turned into a two hour audition, with "Growin' Up" as the highlight.

Springsteen, always a raconteur, performed it at most of his concerts in the '70s and '80s and would often lead into it with stories of his youth. The lyrics illustrate teenage rebellion with powerful imagery.

It was featured on the soundtracks of the films "Big Daddy" in 1999 and "Gracie" in 2007.
6. Madonna promised to create a lovely wardrobe.

Answer: Dress You Up

The 1985 song was originally entitled "Gonna Dress You Up in My Love" and was thought to have contributed to Madonna's sexy fashion image. It was the subject of controversy when the Parents Music Resource Center named this as one of their "Filthy 15" songs with objectionable content.

The PMRC was an organization formed by the wives of some powerful U.S. politicians in 1985 who led the effort to put labels on music that was sold with sexual or violent content. When the founder, Tipper Gore, heard her daughter listening to the song, she considered the line "Gonna dress you up in my love" to be "vulgar music".
7. The Cars danced all night and played all day.

Answer: Shake It Up

A tailor-made party song, with the simple "dance all night" refrain, it became a favorite dance party tune. Synthesizers and drum machines gave it futuristic sound in 1981, and a forward look into the Cars' music. The Cars became one of the groups credited with bringing the New Wave sound to the mainstream. While mainstream radio was reluctant to put a punk record on the air, it found New Wave less intimidating.

The "Kids Incorporated" episode "Superbike" covered this song in 1984 and it was featured in the 2011 movie "Johnny English Reborn".
8. Archie Bell and the Drells wanted musicians to get "restricted" and taught us a new dance.

Answer: Tighten Up

Resulting from a comment made after the Kennedy assassination that "nothing good ever came out of Texas" Bell wanted his listeners to know Archie Bell and the Drells were from Texas and they were good! Hence, the intro to the song.

At the time of its release Bell was drafted into the army and was serving in Vietnam. He was shot in the leg and the song went to number one while he was in a military hospital trying to convince people the song on the radio was his! It reached number one on both the Billboard R&B and Pop charts in the Spring of 1968.

The song has been referenced in the 2001 Spike Lee film "A Huey P. Newton Story" and the 1994 episode of "The Simpsons" entitled "Bart Gets Famous".
9. Wings assured us that good things (peace, love, friendship) were on the way.

Answer: Coming Up

Released in 1980, the song had a very catchy, bouncy sound to it and reached number two in its third week on UK charts. In the US, "Coming Up" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.

The song is probably most well known for its video, in which Paul and Linda McCartney are the only people to appear. It featured Paul playing ten different rock musicians and Linda playing two. The characters in the video are mostly composites with the exception of guitarist Hank Marvin, keyboardist Ron Mael, and the bassist, of course, is Paul portraying a different version of himself!

The video made its world premiere on "Saturday Night Live" May 17, 1980.
10. The Fabulous Thunderbirds wanted a gift of love.

Answer: Wrap It Up

Despite the Fabulous Thunderbirds being a favorite of fellow musicians, opening shows for the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton, the band's records did not sell particularly well until 1985. They landed a recording contract with Epic and "Wrap It Up" went to number 50 in the Billboard Hot 100. It was the follow up single to "Tuff Enuff".

The Fabulous Thunderbirds are still going strong with their 2013 album "On the Verge". Kim Wilson summed it best when he said, "Music still feels fresh to me. That's why I'm still doing what I do at this age." And that's why we're still listening!
