Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Number 118 is Lesley Gore's "It's My Party". Number 119 is also by Lesley Gore and featured in a Simpsons episode sung along by Homer and Chief Wiggum in Marge on the Lam. Can you guess the song title?

Answer: Sunshine, Lollypops and Rainbows

This song is a real campy classic and it was eerie that both Homer and Chief Wiggum know all the lyrics. However, Chief Wiggum was described as a bit too Village People.
2. Number 228 is Zoë singing "Sunshine on a Rainy Day". Which former Spice Girl mauled this song in a cover version?

Answer: Emma Bunton

This song takes me back to the hazy days of school discos. It's a shame that Zoë wasn't able to capitalise on the career opportunities fronted to her from this song. The world's loss, I suppose.
3. Number 120 is Leftfield and Johnny Lydon collaborating on which track?

Answer: Open Up

'Burn Hollywood Burn' (fantastic lyric), a real classic from the mid 1990's. Johnny Lydon was the perfect choice to do vocals on this track. It wouldn't look out of place on a Sex Pistols album either - save for the lack of guitars.
4. Number 26 is Pete Burns singing "The Crying Game".

Answer: False

It's Boy George singing the track. Loved the movie, enjoyed the tune.
5. What were Boy meets Girl waiting to fall on 15?

Answer: A Star

"Waiting for a Star to Fall" was an obscure track plucked from a Greatest Hits album in 1989. This wasn't exactly one of the greatest hits of 1989, it was a filler track that I'm sure the record companies insisted on. Still, the damn song grew on me.
6. What were Blancmange living on in track number 12?

Answer: The Ceiling

Like Leftfield's "Open Up", "Living on the Ceiling" has a Sitar-esque rhythm running through the track which I've always liked. This song didn't exactly set the world afire when released in the 1980's but the time is ripe for a revival!
7. Fill in the lyric for track number 135, which is Mama Cass singing "Dream a Little Dream of Me": 'I'm longing to linger `till ....'

Answer: dawn dear

The Mamas and The Papas enjoyed a brief revival in the 1990's (in Britain, anyway) thanks to "California Dreaming" being played to a lager advertisment, and the film Beautiful Thing. Then I bought their Greatest Hits and downloaded a few tracks.
8. Number 189 is Spitting Image and "The Chicken Song" which was a UK number 1 in 1988. What did they suggest you do with salami?

Answer: Stuff in in your ears

I make no apologies for my taste in music. Blame my parents. I was 9 when this came out and to a child, it was great.
9. Numbers 142 to 147 are songs by which artiste who had other hits like "Rain", "Beautiful Stranger", and "Holiday'"?

Answer: Madonna

Most of the Madonna stuff I have on my MP3 player is taken from the "Ray of Light" album, which was a real turn around for her career. The songs I have picked by her echo a certain loneliness that we all feel on occasion and are good in boosting morale.
10. Number 40 is a cover version of a Roy Orbison song by Cyndi Lauper. Which one?

Answer: I Drove All Night

In my humble opinion, she improved the song. Celine Dion, when she covered it, annhiliated it.
11. John Dillinger informed everyone to lie down on the floor and keep calm on which KLF track at 126?

Answer: Last Train to Transcentral

It was a real shame the KLF split up, as they were true pioneers in the music industry. Of course, that movie of them burning £1,000,000 was a real shocker too.
12. Speaking of the KLF, their initial incarnation was as the group The Timelords. "Doctor Who" appears as track number 194. When they appeared on Top of the Pops in 1986, which glam-rock icon appeared with them?

Answer: Gary Glitter

It would have been interesting to have seen Marc Bolan, seeing as he had been dead 10 years. In the Top of the Pops studio, Glitter came down some stairs and joined in the song which borrowed heavily from many glam-rock tracks and featured samples from "Dr Who". The Timelords/KLF bragged how easy it was to make a number 1 record and did so. It's even easier today, fellas.
13. Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" is number 47. What is the missing word in the following repeated lyric: 'Reach out and touch - '?

Answer: Faith

A simple but memorable track by Depeche Mode. This was released back in 1986 and the video, as I recall, was a very strange affair set in the desert. As good as "Enjoy the Silence".
14. Track 176: Did Sophie B Hawkins say that she'd put on the Rolling Stones if she was my girl in "Damn! I wish I was your lover"?

Answer: Yes

Another singer with an impressive voice who failed to set the world alight, and yet there are plenty of talentless bimbos out there. Pop Idol, Simon Fuller and Rene Angelil have a lot to answer for.
15. Which Dusty Springfield track, covered by the Tourists in 1977, features on track 45?

Answer: I Only Want to Be With You

For me, this is the quintessential 60's tune. It really captures the optimism of the decade until all the fun was sucked out in the 1970's.
16. Track 216: What 3-word phrase in U2's "The Fly" is often repeated in the song?

Answer: It's No Secret

I thought this was some of U2's best work and back in 1991 when this was released, I listened to it all the time.
17. Only one of my songs, number 133, was never released to the public as a single and could only be found on a compilation. The song is "It's Grim Up North (Part One)", the band were the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu (those KLF people again) and the year was 1991. What tune was the track set to during the last 58 seconds of the song? As a clue, you might think to church tunes and the name of a capital city.

Answer: Jerusalem

This was the first tune I ever downloaded as it was a scarce song to get hold of. It was on "Now 20" and promised to be on the album the "Black Room", which failed to materialise. It's sheer poetry, despite the depressing overtones.
18. The computer thinks that Annie Lennox's "Little Bird" at number 4 mysteriously lasts 9 minutes and two seconds, which would make it my longest non-classical piece. However, it lasts for half that time. Which album did this tune come from?

Answer: Diva

Brilliant album released from the former Eurythmics vocalist when she and Dave Stewart split up. That and "Walking on Broken Glass" are the finest solo tunes she sang.
19. I have a cluster of classical pieces in the mix. Which composer wrote "Moonlight Sonata" at number 19?

Answer: Beethoven

I've always liked this piece, together with "Für Elise". He's a simple composer who is great to listen to on a Sunday morning whilst nursing a headache the size of a small European nation.
20. One thing you should know about me: I'm a dancing queen. Can you guess which band or singer might be number 1 on the tracklist?

Answer: ABBA

Yep, I've lumped for listing tunes alphabetically by performer. ABBA is number 1, Zoë is number 228. All this could change but only if Aaron Aaronson and Zzzzachary Zukowski release songs.
