Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "You give your hand to me, and then you say hello" is the opening line of this Ray Charles song. Which one?

Answer: You Don't Know Me

With a career spanning 50 years Ray Charles was one of America's most influential musicians. His voice was instantly recognisable, as was his style of fusing blues, soul and rock and roll together into some unforgettable songs.

Released in 1962 "You Don't Know Me" is a song of love for a woman who sees the singer as only a friend, not as a potential lover.
2. Between December 1950 and February 1951 no less than eight versions of "My Heart Cries For You" made the Billboard Top 30. Which of the following did NOT record it during that period?

Answer: Frank Sinatra

Begging his lover to come back to him after a quarrel, Guy Mitchell had the biggest hit out of the many versions of "My Heart Cries For You", making number two. Dinah Shore made number three and Vic Damone number four. The lowest entry was number twenty nine for Victor Young and his Orchestra.

The song perfectly suited Guy Mitchell's sing-a-long style, and was the first in a long line of hit records for him.
3. "Lover Man (Oh Where Can You Be?)" was written for which female singer?

Answer: Billie Holliday

Written by Jimmy Davies, Roger Ramirez and James Sherman this 1941 song tells of a woman desperate to feel and experience love. It has been recorded by many fine female singers, but Billie Holiday's voice made it an unforgettable song of pathos and longing. Her version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1989.
4. Originally composed by Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis for the sound track of the film "The Island of The Brave", which Brenda Lee song tells of the unrequited love following the break up of an affair?

Answer: All Alone Am I

Originally composed in Greek, the tune was sent to Brenda Lee's management as a possible song for her. The lyrics were translated by Arthur Altman, and the finished version emerged, in 1962, as "All Alone Am I". It became a hit in both America and the UK. It charted at number three on the Billboard Chart and number seven in the UK Singles Chart.
5. Which part of Franki Valli adored you?

Answer: Eyes

Topping the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1975 "My Eyes Adored You" was Frankie Valli's first hit as a solo artist. It is a perfect description of unrequited love, with the object of his affection being "so close so close, and yet so far away".
6. "I (Who Have Nothing)" is another much recorded song; in the UK it is most associated with Shirley Bassey, but who did the original 1963 version?

Answer: Ben E King

An Italian song translated by Lieber and Stoller, this was first recorded by Ben E. King who had a Billboard number 29 with it. All of the singers shown above have recorded it either as a single or album track. Shirley Bassey first recorded it in 1963, and since then she has performed it in almost all her live shows.

It is perfectly suited to her dramatic performances and is a guaranteed show stopper.
7. Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto sang about the "Girl From-----?

Answer: Ipanema

The "Girl From Ipanema" was given the Grammy for Record of The Year in 1965. It was one of those songs that was on every time you played the radio and was popular worldwide. Even Frank Sinatra got in on the act with a version of it.
The singer tells of how much he loves her, but as she walks to the beach she never even looks at him.
8. "Without You" is one of the great songs about unrequited love. Harry Nilsson had a Billboard number one with it, but members of which British group wrote it?

Answer: Badfinger

Badfinger were a group from Swansea who had success in the early 1970s. Two of their members, Pete Ham and Tom Evans, wrote "Without You" and Badfinger themselves recorded it. Unfortunately, due to management problems and allegations of financial mismanagement, they were forced to stop working and their assets were frozen.

In 1975 this led to Pete Ham committing suicide. Tom Evans, who found his friend's body, never completely recovered from the shock, and in 1983 he also took his own life.
9. Donovan felt he might as well try to catch what as receive love from the woman of his desire?

Answer: Wind

"Catch The Wind" was written and recorded by Donovan in 1965. It was his first release and made number four on the UK Singles Chart. Starting off as a folk singer Donovan became popular following live television appearances on "Ready Steady Go", a very popular British pop music show. His gentle hippy style perfectly suited the times, but his fortunes waned when punk music arrived.
10. "Unchained Melody" is widely associated with the Righteous Brothers, but it was originally a film theme. What was the name of the film?

Answer: Unchained

The tune of "Unchained Melody" was used for the 1955 prison film "Unchained". It was then recorded as a vocal by Al Hibler and Jimmy Young, but it was the 1965 cover version by the Righteous Brothers that became the most played, and that was the version used in the film "Ghost".

In the UK Robson and Jerome sang it in the TV show "Soldier Soldier". They later released it as a single, and it was so popular it gave the two actors a whole new career as vocalists, leading to two CDs of song book classics.
