Emotion in Songs Trivia Questions

1. Which former member of the Stone Roses released the single 'F.E.A.R.' in 2003?

From Quiz
Hold No Fear

Answer: Ian Brown

'F.E.A.R.' was the first single from former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown's third album, 'Music of the Spheres'. Brown cleverly incorporated an acrostic spelling the word 'fear' into each line of the song, with lines such as 'for everyman a religion', 'free expression as revolution' and 'forget everything and remember'. He was inspired to write the song by Malcolm X's autobiography, which discussed etymology and using language to control people. Manchester United fans in the Stretford End of Old Trafford created a banner based on the song with 'For Everymanc A Religion' on it (Brown is a United fan himself).

2. Love seems to be quite violent, going by this 1983 hit. Who claimed that "Love is a Battlefield"?

From Quiz What is Love?

Answer: Pat Benatar

This 1983 hit single was written by Holly Knight and Mike Chapman and released on the album "Live From Earth". Ms. Benatar seems quite taken with the idea of love as a battle, as she also had chart toppers with "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and "All Fired Up"!

3. The band U2 released the single "Numb" in 1993. The song was inspired by the numbing sensory overload which was incorporated in the band's tour. Which band member spoke the lyrics of this song?

From Quiz Uncomfortably Numb

Answer: The Edge

The song "Numb" was recorded U2's 1993 studio album "Zooropa". The song, album and subsequent tour mocked the television and media oversaturation of the time by incorporating a series of sensory overload. The song's music video had U2 guitarist, the Edge, sitting in a chair reciting the lyrics as the other band members played gags on him.

4. Which well-known song by The Beatles, about a woman who "was buried along with her name", presents a bleak depiction of human loneliness in under three minutes?

From Quiz Music Is My Only Friend

Answer: Eleanor Rigby

Released in August 1966 both as a single and as part of "Revolver", The Beatles' seventh studio album, "Eleanor Rigby" was groundbreaking in a number of ways, and paved the way for the development of art rock. Its double string quartet arrangement went beyond what at the time was considered conventional for a pop song, as did its poignant lyrics that describe the utter loneliness of two people, Eleanor Rigby and Father McKenzie, the priest who celebrates her funeral. In the 1980s, a headstone bearing the name "Eleanor Rigby" was discovered in the cemetery of St Peter's Parish Church, in the Liverpool suburb of Woolton, where John Lennon and Paul McCartney used to spend time together as teenagers. "Dear Prudence" and "Martha My Dear" appear on The Beatles' self-titled 1968 album (known as "The White Album"), while "Lady Madonna" was released as a single, also in 1968.

5. Which group sang "Can't Buy Me Love"?

From Quiz Love of My Life

Answer: The Beatles

There were several Lennon-McCartney compositions with the word "love" in the title. For example, the Beatles had hits with "She Loves You" (fairly recently sung to William and Kate by their guests at the Royal Wedding reception in the UK in 2011), and ""All You Need is Love", which became an anthem for the counterculture in the sixties.

6. Which song starts with the lines: "When I was young I never needed anyone And makin' love was just for fun Those days are gone"?

From Quiz I Feel Lonely

Answer: All by Myself

"All by Myself" was written by Eric Carmen and first performed in 1975. A legal agreement was made to share the royalty fees with the estate of the composer Sergei Rachmaninoff as the verse is based on the second movement of his second Piano Concerto. It was also a hit single by Celine Dion in 1996 and has featured in albums by many other artists.

7. The first song is from 1958. The song "Lonely Teardrops" was sung by a legendary R&B singer. Name the singer of this hit in 1958.

From Quiz Are You Lonesome Tonight?

Answer: Jackie Wilson

This song was composed by three artists, including future Motown head Berry Gordy Jr. The song peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1958 and number one on the R&B charts. It was listed number 308 on Rolling Stone's All-Time 500 songs. This was one of the first "doo-wop" songs with the lyric "Shooby doo wop wop wop" repeated three times at the opening of the song.

8. 'Don't Leave Me This Way' was a hit for Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes in 1975, but was an even bigger hit in the USA the following year for which female singer?

From Quiz Stop! In the Name of Love

Answer: Thelma Houston

A much recorded song, 'Don't Leave Me This Way' charted for Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes at number three on the US Billboard Disco chart. Thelma Houston's version reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1976, although it managed only number thirteen on the UK Singles Chart. The original version did rather better in the UK, getting to number five in 1977. The song then hit the charts for The Communards in 1986, reaching number one in the UK Singles Chart and also managing number one on the US Hot Dance Club chart.

9. Never trouble trouble, but which King of Rock and Roll sang "If you're looking for trouble You came to the right place If you're looking for trouble Just look right in my face"?

From Quiz Never Trouble Trouble

Answer: Elvis & Presley & Elvis Presley

These lines are from the Elvis Presley song "Trouble" which was recorded in 1958 and featured in the movie "King Creole". Elvis seemed to like the word trouble having later recorded another song titled "T-R-O-U-B-L-E". The song was originally written by Jerry Chestnut and later also covered by country music singer Travis Tritt.

10. "Open up your hate and let it flow into me" is a lyric from 'Down With The Sickness' by Disturbed, but which one of Weird Al Yankovic's trademark 'polka' mixes also included this line?

From Quiz I Will Always Hate You

Answer: Angry White Boy Polka

From Weird Al Yankovic's 2003 album, 'Poodle Hat', the "Angry White Boy Polka" features cheerful, polka versions of angry songs by artists such as Papa Roach, System of a Down, Eminem and Limp Bizkit. Weird Al is best known for writing song parodies and playing his accordion on many polka remixes and tunes which feature on the majority of his albums.

11. The theme tune to the 1984 film "Ghostbusters" included the lines 'who you gonna call?' Who composed and sang the song?

From Quiz Call Me - Back

Answer: Ray Parker, Jr.

The answer to the question in the song was, of course, 'Ghostbusters!'. The other memorable lyric was 'I ain't afraid of no ghost'. Parker wrote the song in only a few days and was rewarded with a number one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and number two on the UK Singles chart. The song was adapted in 2009 for a television advertisement for the UK directory enquiries service 118 118. Parker appeared in the commercial himself, singing the revised lyrics.

12. The first hit for Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show was about a telephone conversation with which member of Sylvia's family?

From Quiz Call Me

Answer: Mother

The band had a hit with 'Sylvia's Mother' in 1972, with the song reaching number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the UK Singles Chart. It was written by Shel Silverstein and is about a young man, desperate to speak to his former girlfriend, Sylvia, but being thwarted by her mother, who says 'Sylvia's busy, too busy to come to the 'phone'. The band was led by singers Dennis Locorriere and Ray Sawyer, who wore an eyepatch after losing an eye in a car accident. The group became known just as Dr. Hook and also had hits with the joky 'The Cover of the Rolling Stone' (1972), 'A Little Bit More' (1976) and 'When You're in Love With a Beautiful Woman' (1979).

13. In 1964, the song "A World Without Love" went to number one on the US Billboard 100. Who recorded it?

From Quiz Put a Little Love in Your Heart

Answer: Peter and Gordon

"A World Without Love" was originally written by Paul McCartney. It was a hit in Britain, overtaking the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love".

14. 'All You Need is Love' was a 1967 hit for which band?

From Quiz Love, Never Out of Style

Answer: The Beatles

The single 'All You Need Is Love' was written by John Lennon, and credited to John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The song was included on the American long-playing version of 'Magical Mystery Tour'. The Stranglers called him their number one fan, but after the group befriended a group of punks who would become known as the Finchley Boys, he felt his position was threatened. With these two vital factors in his life gone, Dave threw himself off Tower Bridge into the River Thames on 9th February 1977. Title track "No More Heroes" is one of the band's most famous compositions. It reached number eight on the UK charts in 1977 and bemoans the loss of the heroes - or, more accurately, anti-heroes - of yesteryear. "Dead Ringer" was an album track from "No More Heroes" and is one of the few tracks to feature lead vocals from keyboard player Dave Greenfield. "Something Better Change" was a double A-side with "No More Heroes".
