Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Madonna song features the lyrics "You're just jealous 'cause you can't beat me"?

Answer: Gambler

"Gambler" is one of Madonna's early tunes that manifests her danceable side. It is also one of the rare songs Madonna wrote on her own. She wrote a lot of her early tunes such as "Lucky Star" on her own. Madonna co-wrote and co-produced the majority of her hit songs throughout her long, distinguished career. "Gambler" is from the 1985 motion picture "Vision Quest", which starred Matthew Modine and which Madonna has a cameo in, as a club singer. Even though it ranks up as one of the best of her early songs, not many people know about "Gambler" like they do about a myriad of Madonna's hits. That's because "Gambler" wasn't released as a single.
2. Which of her albums did Madonna dedicate to actor Sean Penn?

Answer: True Blue

In the linear notes of "True Blue", Madonna dedicates the LP to Sean by saying "This album is dedicated to my husband. The coolest guy in the universe". When "True Blue" was released in 1986, Madonna was married to Penn. Around this time, Sean developed a much maligned reputation for his demeanor towards the media.

When he and Madonna divorced in early 1989, Sean took more of a hit to his reputation from the press and the Madonna fans as both the media and the Madonna fans were glad he was no longer part of Madonna's life. Fortunately for Sean, he was able to redeem himself from that period as he continued to give a myriad brilliant performances in movies and won an Academy Award. Sean still does cause controversy nowadays with his political viewpoints, but it seems like the public has finally recognized him more as a great actor, writer, and director than as being Madonna's former husband.
3. As a guest on "The Tonight Show" in 1987, what famous fast food restaurant did Madonna tell Johnny Carson she used to work at?

Answer: Arby's

This was Madonna's first appearance as a guest on a talk show. She mentioned she worked at Arby's when the legendary talk show host asked Madonna what life was like for her as a teenager. In terms of talk show appearances, many people remember the one in 1994 with David Letterman when Madonna blared out profanity.

But her only appearance with Carson in 1987 is interesting and one Madonna fans would want to remember instead.
4. Who was Madonna's date when she attended the 1991 Academy Awards?

Answer: Michael Jackson

It was a once in a lifetime experience seeing the two music legends, Madonna and Michael, seated side by side in the front row of the Oscar ceremony. Also, that night, Madonna performed "Sooner Or Later" from "Dick Tracy", which won the golden statue for best song. That was the same evening Kevin Costner and his film "Dances With Wolves" won the most Oscars.

But it seemed like Madonna and Michael being together was the highlight of that night.
5. Which Madonna album didn't receive four stars in a "Rolling Stone" review?

Answer: Bedtime Stories

"Bedtime Stories" received a lot of rave reviews in 1994. "Rolling Stone" rated it three and a half stars (between good and excellent). "Music", "Ray Of Light", and "Erotica" all received four stars (excellent). It's surprising "Erotica" was rated four stars because, overall, it received mixed reviews from music critics in 1992.
6. In a special "TV Guide" issue paying tribute to great music moments on television, which Olympic gold medalist said seeing Madonna perform "Borderline" on "Solid Gold" was the best moment?

Answer: Summer Sanders

Summer was a US Olympic swimmer who won a gold medal in 1992. She is perhaps more well known as a television personality for hosting programs such as "NBA Inside Stuff", "The Sports List" on Fox Sports Net, and a game show on Nickelodeon.
7. Madonna made an appearance on "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno.

Answer: True

Her first appearance was in 1994 when Leno taped a series of shows in New York City. During Jay's monologue, Madonna made a surprise appearance and had a little chat with Jay. This was in response to a previous show in which legendary talk show host Dick Cavett told Jay not to let Madonna sit on the guest chair, which Madonna eventually did. Even though Jay has made fun of Madonna a myriad of times in his monologues, he did seem nervous by her presence.

It goes to show what an aura Madonna has.
8. When Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell appeared on the "Arsenio Hall Show" in 1992, Rosie performed a parody of which Madonna song?

Answer: Vogue

Rosie sang with different lyrics while Arsenio's band was playing the melody to "Vogue". She and Madonna were promoting "A League Of Their Own", in which they starred. This was a time when Rosie was well known as a VH1 VJ, but was on the verge of becoming a bigger star, long before her popular TV talk show and her controversial stint on "The View".
9. In her "Like A Virgin" performance during her 1985 "Virgin" tour, Madonna sang a few lines of which Michael Jackson song?

Answer: Billie Jean

It was appropriate Madonna sang a few lines of the classic pop song because "Billie Jean" and "Like A Virgin" sound the same. By singing "Billie Jean", it manifested that Madonna is one of many music performers who are influenced by Michael.
10. With whom did Madonna perform a duet of a special rendition of the Sonny and Cher hit "I've Got You Babe"?

Answer: Sandra Bernhard

This was in 1989 during a benefit concert called "Don't Bungle The Jungle". Sandra Bernhard is a talented comedian/actress who starred in "The King Of Comedy" with Robert DeNiro and Jerry Lewis and has starred in a myriad of films and does a lot of stand up comedy. Before Rosie, in the late 80s, Madonna had a close friendship with Sandra, who was on David Letterman's old NBC program quite frequently and invited Madonna on the show in 1988.

When Sandra and Madonna performed "I've Got You Babe", they wore similar clothes and the lyrics they sang were different from the original song's.
