Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "All the ones around me and I don't care who you are."

Answer: Tuning My Guitar

From "Affectionately" (1969), a great song that has lasted and is found on many of her "Best of" albums.
2. "In the middle of the night, when the world crashes with all its might."

Answer: Johnny Boy

Again from "Affectionately" (1969). One of her best, she sings it with real emotion.
3. "I never think of that once told story when two flowers almost were one."

Answer: In The Hour

From her first ever album "Born to Be" way back in 1968, this one is quite sad.
4. Easy one this: "Once I went on a diet, a carbohydrate diet ain't nice..."

Answer: Animal Crackers

Another one from "Born to Be" (1968), this one became most well known because in the middle of a live performance Melanie forgets this line. The version with the missing words is on most of the CDs, very funny song this.
5. "Somehow the music hides it and conceals it."

Answer: Some Say (I Got Devil)

From "Gather Me" (1971), a very thoughtful song, my favourite.
6. "We were so close there was no room, we bled inside each other's wounds."

Answer: Lay Down

From "Candles in the Rain" (1970), her first really successful album following her appearance in the pouring rain at Woodstock, where the ritual of the audience holding candles began.
7. "I wish I could find a good book to live in, wish I could find a good book."

Answer: What Have They Done to My Song, Ma?

From "Candles In The Rain" (1970), Melanie wrote the lyrics and the New Seekers had a hit with it. This song has also been played by Vonda Shepard on "Ally McBeal."
8. "I've got a brand new pair of rollerskates, you've got a _______."

Answer: Brand New Key

Also from "Gather Me" (1971), Melanie got to no. 1 with this in the U.S .and was in the charts for 3 months. The song has the same tune as "The Combine Harvester" by the Wurzels.
9. "Don't wait any longer for your world to begin, when you can have your cake and eat it too."

Answer: Lay Lady Lay

Melanie's version is from "Garden In The City" (1971, with the scratch and sniff cover). The song was originally written by Bob Dylan.
10. "Poor little hairy kids out on their own" is the first line from which song, which is also the name of the album?

Answer: Good Book

From "Good Book" (1971), the original LP came with a small booklet containing drawings and lyrics.
11. "The first to say hello and the last to say goodbye."

Answer: Prematurely Grey

From "Cowabonga" (1989), a hauntingly sad song.
12. "If I open my eyes just a little bit more, I can see Nanny's dressing gown on the door."

Answer: Christopher Robin

From "Born To Be" (1968), based on A. A. Milne's Christopher Robin.
13. "Have a bunch of kids who call me Mom, that's gotta be what it's all about."

Answer: Sign On The Window

From "Good Book" (1971) another remake of a Bob Dylan song.
14. "Now the world is the heaven that won't accept me."

Answer: I Really Loved Harold

Another early one from "Born To Be" (1968), tackling the issue of promiscuity very well.
15. "It knocks at heaven's door and opens it as well."

Answer: Racing Heart

Possibly the best song from her 1989 album "Cowabonga."
