Michael was born in 1962, in the Midlands. He grew up near Stratford-on-Avon, famous for being the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Michael starred as Marius when 'Les Miserables' first began in 1985. He caused a sensation with 'Empty Chairs at Empty Tables'. The original cast album featuring this song earned a platinum disc for worldwide sales. 'Aspects of Love' and 'Phantom' came later, with 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' opening in the West End in April 2002.

Michael's song was, of course, 'One Step Out Of Time'. He later said that he had not enjoyed the competitive side of the experience, and that 'I would rather stick pins in my eyes than do that again.'
