Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which song was The Monkees first number one hit?

Answer: 'Last Train To Clarksville'

'Last Train To Clarksville' was a last minute composition of Boyce and Hart when it was noticed The Monkees were a few songs short of a full (debut) album. So, it was quite a shock when it hit number one so quickly. 'Saturday's Child' was also on their debut album, yet 'Your Auntie Grizelda' was on their second album, 'More Of The Monkees'.
2. Boyce and Hart wrote many songs for The Monkees. Which one of the following did they NOT write?

Answer: 'Pleasant Valley Sunday'

'Pleasant Valley Sunday' was written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King. This duo also wrote their songs 'I Don't Think You Know Me', 'Sometime In The Morning', and 'Star Collector' (just to name a few).
3. Which song contains the line 'Dark and rolling figures move through prisms of no color'?

Answer: 'Daily Nightly'

'Daily Nightly' is one weird (in a good way) song. The rest of that verse goes 'Hand in hand they walk the night, but never know each other. Passion, pastel neon lights light up the jeweled {traveler;} Who, lost in scenes of smoke-filled dreams, find questions, but no answers.'
4. Which song on the album 'The Monkees' isn't really much of a song at all?

Answer: 'Gonna Buy Me A Dog'

'Gonna Buy Me A Dog' is one of the funniest things I've ever heard! It makes me laugh every time. It basically consists of some singing, but mostly Micky and Davy just making fun of the tune's horrible lyrics.
5. Who is Shorty Blackwell?

Answer: Micky's pet cat

I don't know if the other guys even had pets, let alone the one's I made up. Did you know that Micky's sister Coco sings the song's background lyrics? Well she does.
6. Which album, before 'Pool It' and 'Justus' that is, was the last one made under the group name The Monkees?

Answer: 'Changes'

'Changes' was an album made when only two Monkees remained, Davy and Micky. It was released in June of 1970. 'Instant Replay' was the groups first album without Peter, and Mike was pretty much only involved in group appearances after that. Funny how the two actors remain, and the two with the highest musical aspirations have gone...
7. Which song contains the line 'Life is like a cartoon movie, being with you makes it groovy'?

Answer: 'Do You Feel It Too?'

'Do You Feel It Too?' is one of my favorite, late Monkees songs. It appears on the 'Changes' album. Davy sings it.
8. Which song is NOT featured on 'Missing Links Vol. 1'?

Answer: 'Circle Sky'

'Circle Sky' is on 'Missing Links Vol. 2'!! Another version is on the soundtrack to The Monkees's movie 'Head'.
9. Which song on the album 'More Of The Monkees' is actually just a recited poem?

Answer: 'The Day We Fall In Love'

'The Day We Fall In Love' was recited by Davy. Surprise surprise. As the group's designated heartthrob, Davy usually handled the romantic material.
10. Which song contains the line 'No other love stood the test of time'?

Answer: 'Secret Heart'

'Secret Heart' is on the 'Pool It' album released in 1987 reuniting Peter, Micky, and Davy.
11. Who is 'she' in the song 'She Hangs Out'?

Answer: The listener's sister

'How old did you say your sister was?'
12. On which album did the guys first gain some creative control?

Answer: 'Headquarters'

'Headquarters', their third album, was the first album on which the guys actually got to sing AND play their own instruments. Before they were just singing to tracks laid down by other (session) musicians.
13. Which Monkee is the Aquarius in the album title 'Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, and Jones Ltd'?

Answer: Peter

Peter was born February 13, 1942, making him an Aquarius. Micky was born March 8, 1945, making him a Pisces. Davy and Mike are both Capricorns, and both were born on December 30 (Davy in 1945, Mike in 1942). Be sure to mark your calendars!
14. Which song contains the line 'And through the years he thwarted 27 robberies, each time Frisby promised him a raise'?

Answer: 'Mr. Webster'

Frisby probably should have given him that raise too. Perhaps then he wouldn't have run off with all the bank's money!
15. Which Monkee wrote the song 'War Games'?

Answer: Davy

Davy wrote this song with the help of long time collaborater Steve Pitts and it's featured on the 'Missing Links Vol. 1' album. Given the time period in which it was written, it's most likely a song about the war going on in Vietnam. It's an excellent song, and one of my favorites on that album.
16. Which Monkee wrote the song 'Tapioca Tundra'?

Answer: Mike

This song is featured on the album 'The Birds, The Bees, And The Monkees'. I'm sure you other die-hard Monkees fans have noticed this too, but rarely does the title actually appear in a Michael Nesmith song (any Michael Nesmith song).
17. Which song contains the line 'She couldn't budge a smile and do it for free'?

Answer: 'Your Auntie Grizelda'

'Your Auntie Grizelda' is a great song, and it's on the 'More Of The Monkees' album. This is also the song where Peter makes his vocal debut.
18. What clothing store did The Monkees do ads for?

Answer: J.C. Penney

Their actually wearing J.C. Penney clothes on the cover of their second album, 'More Of The Monkees'. That's a very touchy issue for them though. So, if you ever run into them, it's probably best not to mention it. Just FYI.
19. What color was the Monkeemobile?

Answer: Red

That was one weird looking car, I'm telling you.
20. On the album 'The Birds, The Bees, And The Monkees', there is a song about a personal ad. What P.O. Box does the singer want the reply sent to?

Answer: P.O. Box 9847

Unfortunately, the singer (who happens to be Micky) never likes what he's writing and his ad never even gets into the paper.
