Monkees Lyrics Quiz for Experts | Music

Yes, I'll admit it! I was a fan then, and I'm a fan now. I recently had the opportunity to see Micky and Davy in concert and it made me feel 10 years old again. You know the drill, I give you some lyrics, you tell me the name of the song.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'But when I need you beside me, stay close enough to guide me, confide in me...'

Answer: I Wanna Be Free

Written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart this song appeared on 'The Monkees' album and was considered by many to be their version of The Beatles 'Yesterday'.
2. 'I knew I should have taken off my shoes, it's front page news...'

Answer: Goin' Down

Released in the fall of 1967 as the flip side of 'Daydream Believer', this song gives writing credit to Diane Hilderbrand, and all four of the Monkees.
3. 'We'll have time for coffee-flavoured kisses, and a bit of conversation...'

Answer: Last Train to Clarksville

This was their first song, written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. Boyce and Hart were given the job of producing the music for the show, after unsuccessfully auditioning to star in it.
4. 'There are birds out on the sidewalk and a valet at the door. He reminds me of a penguin...'

Answer: Randy Scouse Git

Written and performed by Micky Dolenz, this song appeared on the 'Headquarters' album. It raised more than a few eyebrows in England because the title translates as 'horny twerp from Liverpool'. Because of this the single was released in England under the uninspired name of 'Alternate Title'. (Credit to Ken Barnes, cover notes for 'Greatest Hits' cd.)
5. 'I've done more now than a clear thinkin' man would do...'

Answer: Mary, Mary

Released on 'More of the Monkees', it was written by Michael Nesmith although the lead vocal was sung by Micky Dolenz. This song was originally recorded by 'The Butterfield Blues Band', and then later became a hit for rap stars 'Run-DMC'.
6. 'Rows of houses that are all the same, and no one seems to care.'

Answer: Pleasant Valley Sunday

'The Monkees' had some fantastic song writers producing material for them. This offering was produced by the husband and wife writing team of Gerry Goffin and Carole King.
7. 'Don't know just what I said wrong, girl I apologise.'

Answer: A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You

Written by the incredible Neil Diamond, this was 'The Monkees' third #1 song.
8. 'And if your love is not a game, I only have myself to blame.'

Answer: The Girl That I Knew Somewhere

Another song written by Michael Nesmith that was curiously sung by Micky Dolenz. This was released as the flip side of 'A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You'.
9. 'Wanting to be, to hear and to see...'

Answer: Porpoise Song (Theme From 'Head')

Another offering by Goffin/King this song was the theme song of their movie 'Head'. This movie was a collaborative effort with Jack Nicholson. The movie was not a hit with fans, and the song didn't fare any better than the movie did.
10. 'Disappointment haunted all my dreams.'

Answer: I'm A Believer

Also written by Neil Diamond, this song proved to be 'The Monkees' most successful song, topping the charts for eight weeks.
