This piece, composed in 1919, is part of the score for the ballet 'Love the Magician'. A young gypsy girl is tormented by the jealous spirit of her dead lover. To end her torment the spirit must be lured into the flames.

The Messiah was first performed in Dublin in 1741. Then in 1743, at Covent Garden in London, the King stood. The practice has continued since. "I did see the great God before me", Handel said of this composition.

It is also known as 'Memories of Country Life'. Each movement is descriptively named e.g. 'The Scene by a Brook'. It was composed in 1808.

Lara was Mexican and the song is filled with Latin colour and rhythm.

This was included in the 'Carnival of the Animals' (1886), although it had been composed as a tone poem much earlier. It is the dance of the skeletons. Frenetic is the best word to describe it.

This delightfully soothing piece comes from 'Woodland Sketches'(1896). MacDowell was an American composer, who established the first multidisciplinary retreat in America at 'The Colony'.

This fabulously dramatic piece describes how the Trolls get rid of their King. The opening movement describes them sneaking on tiptoes through huge caves until they reach his chamber. Then the music reaches a frenzy as execution is done.

Liszt was both a composer and virtuoso pianist. In one movement in this most eloquent composition the flutter of wings has been captured according to Bryce Morrison. Quoting Yeats' he describes listening to it as 'an evening full of the linnet's wings'.
