Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The guitar known as "The Red Special" has been in this musician's company since before he and his band got a recording contract. Which guitarist, who now holds a Ph.D in astrophysics, owns this long-played axe?

Answer: Brian May

Brian May's unique, one of a kind instrument was hand-crafted by him and his father, where work began on it in 1963. Replicas have been made available through his company, Brian May Guitars.
2. The Fender Rhodes Keyboard Bass helped this keyboard player's Los Angeles-based band whereby he was able to play bass lines with his left hand while playing chords and soloing with his right hand. Name the four man group whose debut album lit up the charts in the summer of '67.

Answer: The Doors

The Fender Rhodes Keyboard Bass, introduced in 1960, was a small, 32 note instrument where one could play bass lines in the absence of a regular bass player. After auditioning many bass players and agreeing the sound they were looking for wasn't right, The Doors' keyboardist, Ray Manzarek, solved the problem by acquiring this Fender Rhodes instrument where it is heard on early Doors' recordings such as "Break On Through", Light My Fire", and "The End".
3. What stringed instrument did bassist extraordinaire Tony Levin help popularize back in the early 80s?

Answer: Chapman Stick

The Chapman Stick, invented by jazz musician Emmett Chapman, is a stringed instrument with a wide fretboard comprised of 8, 10 or 12 strings and played by tapping instead of plucking. Played upright with the instrument attached to a belt, it has an even number of both guitar and bass strings.

A long time member of King Crimson, Tony Levin's impressive Chapman Stick work can be heard on "Discipline" from 1981, his first recorded work with the band.
4. What name is B.B. King's guitar known by?

Blues legend B.B. King has had many guitars, all of which have bore the name "Lucille". The burning kerosene started a fire and B.B. ran back into the club, now engulfed in flames, to retrieve his instrument. Later on he learned the two men had fought over a girl named Lucille. Naming his guitar "Lucille" would stand as a reminder never do something as haphazard as running into a building on fire.

8. Which jazz musician played a bent trumpet?

Answer: Dizzy Gillespie
