Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the top of the UK chart was a great American soul singer. The song "I Can't Stop Loving You" was his first UK chart-topper, although it was his third in the USA. Who was he?

Answer: Ray Charles

Ray Charles started to have eyesight problems at the age of five, and was totally blind by the time he was seven. Nevertheless he went on to become one of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century. My fondest memory of him is as the proprietor of Ray's Music Exchange in "The Blues Brothers".
2. At number two was Frank Ifield with his first UK chart-topper of four. The song had been sung by Dorothy Lamour in the 1942 film "The Fleet's In". What was the title of the song?

Answer: I Remember You

Frank Ifield was born in England but his family emigrated to Australia when he was a young boy, and he had considerable chart success in his adopted country as well as in the UK.
3. At number three with "A Picture Of You", was a cheeky chappie backed by a band called The Bruvvers. He is still touring today, 50 years later, and his son Pete, a record producer, tours and plays with him. His daughter Sam is a singer and had quite a bit of chart success in the late 80s. Who is he?

Answer: Joe Brown

A great live performer, in 2010 Joe Brown was the support act for veteran rockers Status Quo on their UK arena tour.
4. At number four, on the way down after topping the chart, was a novelty record, "Come Outside" sung by Mike Sarne, with the assistance of a TV actress who appeared in all 69 episodes of the sitcom "Are You Being Served?" and then starred in the soap "Eastenders" from the first show in 1985 right through until 2006. Who was she?

Answer: Wendy Richard

Mike Sarne had one other minor hit, "Will I What?", another novelty record this time featuring Billie Davis, before going on to a career in acting, producing, and directing. Wendy Richard sadly died of cancer in 2009.
5. At number five was another American singer, Jimmie Rodgers, with his version of an old English folk song. The next year Allan Sherman released his version of it "Here's To The Crabgrass" on his album "My Son The Nut" What was the title of Jimmie Rodgers' hit?

Answer: English Country Garden

The song, originally a morris-dancing tune called "Handkerchief Dance", was arranged for piano in the early 20th century by Percy Grainger, and lists the flowers, insects and birds you might expect to see in a traditional county garden in England.
6. At number six was the king, Elvis Presley, with his 11th UK chart-topper which contained the lyric "If I found a lucky penny I'd toss it across the bay". Name the song.

Answer: Good Luck Charm

It obviously took a little longer for Elvis to take off in the UK than at home, as "Good Luck Charm" was his 17th chart-topper in the USA.
7. At number seven was another American singer, a little bundle of dynamite singing "Here Comes That Feeling", her fourth top ten hit in the UK. Oddly it reached only 89 in the Billboard Hot 100 as it was released in the USA as a b-side to "Everybody Loves Me But You". Who was the Atlanta-born singer?

Answer: Brenda Lee

Brenda Lee, "Little Miss Dynamite", had a lot of fans in the UK in the early 60s, and she had the privilege of having a young, almost unknown British band as the opening act on one of her tours - a band called the Beatles!
8. Another American at number eight, with his second of three UK top ten hits, "Ginny Come Lately". Who was he?

Answer: Brian Hyland

Brian Hyland's first success in UK was "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini", so it could only get better from there!
9. At number nine, its peak position, was "Our Favourite Melodies", sung by a young English singer who had had several bigger hits at the turn of the decade, but whose career was coming to an end at this stage. Who was he?

Answer: Craig Douglas

Craig Douglas was a clean-cut young singer, and it was ironic that he appeared in a concert at the Liverpool Empire on 28 October 1962 on the same bill as The Beatles, since their style of music very soon eclipsed his.
10. At number ten was a double-A side, "I'm Looking Out The Window" / "Do You Want To Dance", performed by a singer who has had UK top ten hits in every decade from the 50s to the 00s, with at least one chart-topper in each of these decades but the last one. Who is he?

Answer: Cliff Richard

Cliff Richard has also made a habit of topping the charts at Christmas-time with numbers like "Mistletoe and Wine", "Millennium Prayer", "Santa's List" and "When A Child Is Born".
