Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1980 saw Queen hit the top of the charts with their biggest selling chart topper. Bite what?

Answer: Dust

"Another One Bites the Dust" was a number one tune for Queen during the fall of 1980. It spent three weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts as well as number seven in the U.K. It also shot to the top of the charts in Canada, Argentina, Spain and Guatemala, as well as Top 10 placings in nine other countries.

A truly international hit, the song came from the album called "The Game" and sold over 7 million copies worldwide.
2. One of the biggest hits of the decade came about in 1981 when the theme song from the motion picture "Endless Love" made it to the top of the charts. Which duo recorded it?

Answer: Lionel Richie and Diana Ross

It was Lionel Richie and Diana Ross, two of Motown's finest, who teamed up for "Endless Love" in 1981. Although the motion picture of the same name was less than successful, the song reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts and stayed there for an incredible nine straight weeks.

The song itself is listed as Diana Ross' biggest selling single and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song (it was written by Richie) in 1982.
3. Lionel Richie appears again with this 1982 single that made it to the top of the charts. To tell the truth, I'm not sure if you can guess the name. Can you?

Answer: Truly

"Truly" was Richie's debut single as a solo artist after splitting with The Commodores. He wrote this song which made it to the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts for a two week stay in the fall of 1982. It was off his debut self-titled album. The song got as high as number six in the U.K. It also won a Grammy Award for Richie as Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 1983.
4. This song flowed to the top of the charts for two country music superstars in 1983. Who sang "Islands in the Stream"?

Answer: Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton

"Islands in the Stream" was both a country and pop smash hit for Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. It went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the U.S. and stayed for two weeks in the fall of 1983. It also went to number one on the Country charts in both the U.S. and Canada, and made number seven on the U.K. charts.

The song was written by The BeeGees and produced by Barry Gibb.
5. Don't be a Baby. This is not a Bad question. Give me the English name of the singer who got "Missing You" to the top of the charts in 1984.

Answer: John Waite

John Waite laid down the track for "Missing You" which was a number one tune on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts for one week during the fall of 1984. The song also went top 10 in both the U.K. and Germany. Waite had previously been a member of the group The Babys ("Isn't It Time"), and went solo in 1982. Subsequently he became a member of Bad English ("When I See You Smile") in the late 1980s, becoming one of the few artists in history to have a Top 20 hit as part of three different artist titles.
6. "Everytime You Go Away", was written and recorded by Daryl Hall, becoming his first number one solo tune in 1985.

Answer: False

The song was written by Daryl Hall in 1980 and appeared on the Hall and Oates album "Voices". However, the duo never released the song as a single and it took a cover by Paul Young in 1985 to get the song to the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts for a one week stay. It also peaked in Young's native U.K. at number four.
7. "There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry)" was a number one tune in 1986 for this Caribbean star.

Answer: Billy Ocean

This song was Billy Ocean's follow-up to his number two "When the Going Gets Tough" from the soundtrack of "The Jewel of the Nile" (1985) with Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas. "There'll Be Sad Songs (to Make You Cry)" was number one in the U.S. for one week on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the summer of 1986.
8. This band, known more for dance music hit the top of the charts with "Head to Toe" in 1987, Name them.

Answer: Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam

Lisa Lisa (Lisa Velez) and Cult Jam gave us "Head to Toe" a 1987 hit song that made the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts for a one week stay, as well as reaching the top of the Black Singles charts and the Club/Dance charts simultaneously. The song comes from an album called "Spanish Fly".
9. Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine had their first U.S. number one tune in 1988. Anything wrong with giving me the right answer?

Answer: Anything for You

"Anything for You" was the song that gave the group their first number one hit when it reached the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts for two weeks in the spring of 1988. It came off an album called "Let It Loose' and was one of the last singles recorded before Estefan dropped The Miami Sound Machine from her label.

It is noteworthy that the group remained her backup band, without label credit.
10. Michael Damian, the actor, tried his hand at recording in the late 1980s and scored with a number one cover of "Rock On" in 1989. Who was the original artist?

Answer: David Essex

David Essex did the original in 1973. Michael Damian, who was most well known for playing the role of Danny in the American soap opera "The Young and the Restless", had also recorded some material in the mid 1980s and in fact has had eight Top 40 hits, although you'd be hard pressed to come up with any other than this cover which spent one week at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring of 1989.
