Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which band, with a duplicated name, gave us "Broken Wings" in 1985?

Answer: Mr. Mister

"Broken Wings" was a number one tune on the Billboard Hot 100 charts for Mr. Mister in the fall of 1985, spending two weeks at the top of the charts. It was the first single off their album called "Welcome to the Real World". It also reached number four in the U.K. The song was released during a time when the group was touring the U.S. as an opening act for Tina Turner.
2. Bon Jovi said that we gave something a bad name in 1986. What was it?

Answer: Love

"You Give Love a Bad Name" was the first release from the "Slippery When Wet" album and it climbed to the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts for one week in the fall of 1986. The song was originally written for the group Loverboy, but Jon and the band decided to record it for themselves. It was the group's first number one hit.
3. This cover of a Tommy James and the Shondells gave a young pop diva a number one hit. Who covered "I Think We're Alone Now" in 1987?

Answer: Tiffany

'Tiffany' Renee Darwish, a fiery redhead from California, became a pop sensation in the late 1980s promoting her career by touring and performing at shopping malls across the U.S. Her cover of "I Think We're Alone Now" spent two weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the fall of 1987, also spending three weeks at the top of the U.K. charts.
4. This cover of a Tommy James and the Shondells tune (no, it's not a repeat question) gave a guy who many consider an old pop diva a number one hit. Who covered "Mony Mony" in 1987?

Answer: Billy Idol

Billy Idol originally covered the tune "Mony Mony" in 1981 in a studio recording, but it was a live version in 1987 that went to the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts for a one week stay. The song also reached number seven in the U.K. Interestingly, the song became number one in the U.S. displacing another James classic "I Think We're Alone Now" which was covered by Tiffany and also went to the top of the charts.
5. Cover tunes abound. "Groovy Kind of Love" was a number one hit for Phil Collins in 1988. Can you tell me the name of the group that first hit with this song way back in 1965?

Answer: The Mindbenders

All the listed choices were British Invasion groups, but it was The Mindbenders who first charted in the U.S. with this song back in 1965 scoring at number two on the charts. Phil Collins covered the tune in 1988 and it was used on the soundtrack of the motion picture called "Buster" in which Collins had a starring role.

The song spent two weeks at number one on the U.S. Billboard charts in the fall that year and was number one in at least six other countries across the globe. It was nominated for a 1989 Grammy Award as well.
6. What made the song "Kokomo" by the Beach Boys so unique for its time when it reached number one in 1988?

Answer: It was the longest span between number one hits by a group in Billboard history

"Kokomo' was written by a collaboration of artists which included John Phillips, Scott McKenzie and Mike Love. The song was used in conjunction with a motion picture starring Tom Cruise called "Cocktail" (1988). It spent a week at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the fall of 1988, and also hit the top of the charts in Australia and Japan.

It was the first number one song to hit the top of the charts by The Beach Boys since 1966 when "Good Vibrations" hit the top. The span of 22 years between number one hits by the same artists is the longest in the history of the Billboard charts.

By the way, the island of Kokomo is fictitious.
7. Here's a song by a U.K. group called The Escape Club that went to number one in the U.S. in 1988. How high did the song "Wild, Wild West" get in their home country?

Answer: It never charted

Very unusual, but the number one U.S. tune "Wild Wild West" by the Escape Club never hit the charts in the U.K. It is the only song by British artists to ever be a number one U.S. hit while not charting in the U.K. The song spent a week at the top of the U.S. Billboard charts in the fall of 1988.
8. Janet Jackson's number one tune from 1989 was called "Miss You ____"

Answer: Much

It was "Miss You Much" which gave Janet Jackson her second number one tune and first in almost three years, when it hit the top of the U.S. Billboard charts for a four week stay in the fall of 1989. It permanently established Jackson as a music superstar. The song won two American Music Awards, and was nominated for a Grammy Award as well.
9. "Listen to Your Heart" was a chart topper in 1989 for this group from Sweden. Can you name them?

Answer: Roxette

"Listen to Your Heart" went to number one in the U.S. for one week in the fall of 1989 for Roxette, a duo from Sweden. It came off an album called "Look Sharp".
10. Bad English scored a 1989 number one hit with "When I See You Smile". The lead singer of the group was John Waite. This marked the third time he scored a Top 20 song in the U.S. under a different band or solo name.

Answer: True

Absolutely true. This song was credited to a band called Bad English, an American/British combo of musicians from other groups. The song spent two weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the fall of 1989. Waite had previously scored as a solo artist under his own name with the number one hit "Missing You" in 1984, and back in the 1970, was the lead singer of the group "The Babys" who scored top 20 hits in the U.S. with songs such as "Isn't It Time" and "Everytime I Think of You".
