Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Brenda Lee had a number one hit in 1960 with this movie tune translated from another language. Can you name it?

Answer: I Want to Be Wanted

The 4' 9" singer known affectionately as Little Miss Dynamite took this song to the top of the charts for a one week stay in October of 1960. The song was a translated version of an Italian song that was part of the film "Never on Sunday" (1960). This was the second number one hit for Brenda's during her career. "I'm Sorry" reached the top earlier that same year.
2. "Take Good Care of My Baby" was a number one song for Bobby Vee in 1961. Which of the following artist has NOT covered the tune?

Answer: Frank Sinatra

This song written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin, went to the top of the charts in September 1961 and stayed there for three weeks. The Beatles actually covered this tune in their audition for Decca Records in the early 1960s. Gary Lewis and the Playboys covered the tune in 1965. Bobby Vinton covered it in 1968 and took the song to a number 33 placing on the Billboard U.S. Hot 100.

Although Sinatra covered numerous tunes by many singers, there is no record of him ever covering this one.
3. "Sheila" was a number one hit for this guy in 1962. Can you name him?

Answer: Tommy Roe

Roe has the unique distinction of being one of the musicians who was asked to stand in as a replacement for Buddy Holly after his tragic death in 1959. He came onto the scene in 1960 with his rendition of "Sheila". It didn't sell well. Roe persevered and the song was re-released in 1962 on a different record label and di much better this time.

It went to number one in the U.S. (for two weeks) as well as reaching number one in Canada and Australia, and number three in the U.K. Roe also has the distinction of having one of the longest stretches between number one hits in rock and roll history.

His next number one after this came in 1969 with "Dizzy" after a seven year span.
4. "....and you're gonna be in trouble, hey la day da....", a 1963 summertime hit by this girl group. What's the name of this song?

Answer: My Boyfriend's Back

"My Boyfriend's Back" was a summer 1963 smash for The Angels which spent three weeks at the top of the U.S. charts. They had actually recorded it as a demo and it was originally intended for The Shirelles. The producers liked it so much that they decided to release it on its own and it became The Angels biggest hit.

The girls were originally from New Jersey, and until this song came about, were best known for the romantic ballad "Til" which reached number 14 on the U.S. Billboard charts in 1961. Later in their careers they did backup work, most notably for Lou Christie on his hits "Lightnin' Strikes" and "Rhapsody in the Rain".
5. Roy Orbison scored with this number one tune in 1964.

Answer: Oh, Pretty Woman

More commonly known as Pretty Woman, "Oh, Pretty Woman" was Orbison's last number one hit on the Billboard U.S. Hot 100 charts, moving to the top in the fall of 1964 for a three week stay as well as being a number one hit internationally, in Australia, Canada, Norway, and the U.K.

It was also the last time he made it into the Top 20 until 25 years later when "You Got It" placed at number nine on the charts. "Oh, Pretty Woman" is listed on Rolling Stone Magazine's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" at number 222.
6. "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", from 1965, was the Rolling Stones second straight number one U.S. Billboard hit.

Answer: False

It actually was the first song that went to number one for the group in the U.S. In the U.K. it was already their fourth, following "It's All Over Now", "Little Red Rooster", and "The Last Time". In the U.S. it took nine tries before they got to the top with this song for a four week stay in 1965. Songs such as "Not Fade Away" (a Buddy Holly cover), "It's All Over Now", "Tell Me", "Time Is On My Side", and "The Last Time" all preceded "Satisfaction" but never reached the top.

History says that it was worth the wait. Rolling Stone Magazine (no pun here) placed this song at number two on its list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time".
7. If I give you the motion picture "Major League" (1989) you should be able to give me the name of the popular number one 1966 song that was synonymous with the film.

Answer: Wild Thing

Written by Chip Taylor, the song was originally recorded by a group called The Wild Ones in 1965 who had little success with it. The Troggs, from England, covered the song in 1966 and took it to the top of the charts for a two week stay in the summer of that year.

The song is most famously used in the movie "Major League" (1989) as the theme song for pitcher Rick Vaughan (Charlie Sheen). This version is a cover by a group named "X". The Troggs version is listed on Rolling Stone Magazine's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" at number 257.
8. This is a number one song from 1967 performed by Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie. What's the song?

Answer: To Sir With Love

This is the birth name of the Scottish born singer Lulu, who took "To Sir With Love", the title song from the 1967 motion picture of the same name,(with backup vocals by The Mindbenders) to the top of the charts for a five week stay in the fall of 1967 and Billboard number one song for the entire year of 1967. Ironically, the song was never released as a single in the U.K. Lulu also was featured in the motion picture as Barbara "Babs" Pegg, one of the students that Mr. Thackery (Sidney Poitier) tries to tame.
9. Both Gladys Knight and the Pips and Marvin Gaye had hugely successful versions of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine". Which of the two artists took it to number one in 1968?

Answer: Gaye

Gladys Knight and The Pips released their version in 1967 and it's highest placing was at number three on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts. It was Marvin Gaye's version that made it all the way to the top, for an unbelievable seven week stay which carried right over into early 1969.

The song (Marvin Gaye's version) is listed on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" at number 80. It is also the version used in the popular 1980s commercials for The California Raisins.
10. Go to any sporting event and you're likely to hear fans letting off steam with this 1969 number one hit.

Answer: Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye

You may have heard any of these songs at a sporting event at one time or another but its Steam's "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" which is usually played and sung to the lament of visiting players at many sporting events around the U.S. Steam was a fictitious group of studio musicians created by writers Paul Leka, Gary DeCarlo and Dale Frashuer.

The song was a number one hit for the group in 1969, with a two week stay at the top of the Billboard charts in December that year.
