Answer: The Tornados

"Telstar" written and produced by Joe Meek was number one for five weeks on the UK singles chart and number one for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1962.

French composer Jean Ledrut claimed that "Telstar" had been copied from "La Marche d'Austerlitz" from a score that he had written for the movie "Austerlitz" (1960). The lawsuit that followed prevented Joe Meek from receiving any royalties from the record during his lifetime. The case however, was resolved in his favour in 1967. This settlement came too late for Joe Meek who had been depressed after the hits dried up and put him under desperate financial pressure.

Three weeks earlier possibly during an argument over his rent, he had shot and killed his landlady Violet Shenton with a shotgun. He then turned it on himself and committed suicide. The shotgun belonged to the The Tornados former bass player now soloist Heinz Burt. Joe Meek had taken it from him on a previous occasion and kept it under his bed along with some cartridges.

The origins of the song are lost in the mists of time. The first known recording of the song was by American clawhammer banjo player/guitarist/singer Clarence 'Tom' Ashley and harmonica player Gwen Foster made in 1934. It may be based on ballads taken by English immigrants to the US in the 18th century.
