Answer: Norman Greenbaum

Norman Greenbaum's song is still well known and often covered by
other artists but "Spirit in the Sky" stayed a lonely hit.

Dana had after her 1970 first hit "All Kind of Everything" another one with "Who put the light out" in 1971 and some more to follow. Dana tried for the Irish presidency in 1997.

The England World Cup Squad (that is the soccer team for the world cup) had the song "Back home" twice in the charts in the same year. The fist time before the world cup, the second time when they came back from Mexico -place of the world cup of that year - after being knocked out in the quarter final. The single kicked only up to number 46 the second time around. They made a number 2 in 1982 - "This Time (We'll Get it Right)"/"England, We'll Fly the Flag" and a number one again in 1990 with "World in Motion". Better in the charts than on the grass!

Christie did ride from his 1970 number one hit "Yellow River" to "San Bernadino" (1970, number 7) on an "Iron Horse" (1972, number 47) and wasn't seen again in the charts.

Answer: Mungo Jerry " Baby Jump"

Mungo Jerry had already celebrated a number one with "In the Summertime" the year before 1970, "Baby Jump" was a follow up single.

George Harrison had his first solo number one with "My Sweet Lord" 1971 but of cause quite a lot with the Beatles before.

Middle of the Road had their first chart hit with "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep"

Dave and Ansil Collins from Jamaica had "Double Barrel" on top of the charts in march. Their last chart single was "Monkey Spanner" - a number 7 in june of the same year.

"Amazing Grace" with a a lot of bag pipes piping was not to be overheard in 1972. The guards had two more singles out in 1972 but didn't reach the top 10 again.

The Royal Philamonic Orchestra had their first top 10 in 1981 with "Hooked on Classics" - but never a number one in the seventies.

The Central Band of the Royal Air Force had a number 18 in 1955 with the "Dam Busters March"

The Royal Guards men were an American band who had with "Snoopy vs the Red Baron" a hit in 1967. (Yes, it is about the world's most famous beagle!)

Peters and Lee, a male/female duo had the number trophy just for one week with "Welcome Home"

Donny Osmond had his first top of the pops in 1972 with "Puppy Love" and two more ("The Twelfth of Never", "Young Love") in 1973. Which doesn't made him a beginner.

Slade had -starting their number one row with "Coz I Luv You" already in 1971 and had five more of this sort until 1973. Including their "romantic" christmas song, "Merry X-mas Everybody".

Wizzard had before their 1973 singles "See My Baby Jive" and "Angel Fingers" a top ten song with "Ball Park Incident" in 1972. So they weren't new in 1973.

Peter Sellers - who played in a lot of movies- made a wonderful cover version of the Beatles "A Hard Day's Night". You could hear it around christmas 1965.

Herbert Grönemeyer - actor in "Das Boot" - does a lot of singing and appears quite often in the German top 10. One of his songs from the eighties is called "Männer"

Scottish band Salvation changed their name into Slik and started a short career in 1976. "Forever and Ever" wasn't liked much by the singer of the band, Midge Ure, but it gave them their only number 1. Their second was also the last single which reached the charts. It was called "Requiem". Thinking of the meaning of the word requiem, a good title to say good bye... Midge Ure joined Ultravox some years later.

Bay City Rollers had songs like "Bye Bye Baby",Middle of the Road sung "Soley Soley" and the Average Whiteband had a hit with "Pick up the Pieces" These three groups started their chart history before 1976.

"Are 'Friends' Electric" was still released under his group's name: Tubeway Army.
"Cars", released only some months later than the song mentioned before,was thrown on the market under his own name: Gary Numan.

Both songs were re-released and re-mixed in 1987 as a double A-side.
