Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Even if your cat is very, very old - this novelty instrumental piece is definitely older. Written in 1921 by Zez Confrey, it combines a certain instrument with cats. Do you know this great hit of old times?

Answer: Kitten on the Keys

Inspired by the cat of his granny, that liked to stroll on a piano keyboard, Zez Confrey released this pretty piano piece in 1921. It was his biggest hit. Confrey lived from April 3, 1895 to November 22, 1971.
2. The life of an alley cat isn't easy, it is usually much shorter than that of a pet cat. Nevertheless people like to paint a romantic picture of carefree and adventurous living: "Howlin' to the moonlight on a hot summer night Singin' the blues while the lady cats cry "Wild stray cat, you're a real gone guy" Who performed this?

Answer: Stray Cats

Who else? This lines are from "Stray Cats Strut". It can be found on their very first album, "Stray Cats" (1981, Britain) or on "Built for Speed" (1982, USA).
It was a number eleven in the UK in 1981. After a prolonged catnap the song crossed the big pond and was a Billboard number three in the USA in 1982.
3. It will not surprise you that artists painted this mostly elegant animal. One who did do this was L. S. Lowry. In 1978 a tribute to him reached the top of the British charts. "He painted Salford's smokey tops On cardboard boxes from the shops And parts of Ancoats where I used to play" What was the title of this song?

Answer: Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs

Brian and Michael from Manchester had their only hit in 1978 with "Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs". Lowry -who lived from 1887-1976- liked to paint urban scenes in northern England, filled with the so called matchstick people (and cats and dogs!).

The wrong answers are pictures by L.S. Lowry.
4. Coming to the proverbial cat, the "Cat's in the Cradle". I guess a place that cats really like! "And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon, Little boy blue and the man in the moon." Who did- together with his wife- write this song and brought it to a Billboard number one in 1974?

Answer: Harry Chapin

In fact, Chapin's wife Sandy wrote a poem, Harry Chapin made a song out of it. It is about a father and son relationship, the father never having time for his son, something he does regret later. The song was often covered, for example by Ugly Kid Joe. Chapin died in 1981, just 38 years old.

There is a kind of urban musical legend that the song is a Cat Stevens song.
Cat Stevens did have a compilation album called "Cat's Cradle", and "Father and Son" is about a father and son relationship, but he himself said that he never performed "Cat's in the Cradle". Let's believe him, he should know.
5. For a real cat lover it is difficult to mention a movie like "Lady and the Tramp". Two cats appear but are shown as the bad ones who only want to steal the milk belonging to the baby. At least they have a wonderful song. Can you name it?

Answer: The Siamese Cat Song

"We are Siameeiz if you please
We are Siameeiz if you don't please
We are former residents of Siam
There are no finer cats than I am"

The movie about the love affair of two dogs appeared on silver screen in 1955.
The "Siamese Cat Song" was sung by Peggy Lee. She gave both cats- called Si and Am- her voice. Haylie Duff made a cover some fifty years later.
6. Sometimes it doesn't need words to make a good song. In the year of 1962 a song called "Alley Cat" strolled around the world, a year after it was first released in Denmark under the name "Omkring et Flygel" What is the main instrument composer Bent Fabric played on this tune?

Answer: Piano

"Omkring et Flygel" can be translated "Around a Piano" (At least Wikipedia tells me so). The song was the title tune of a TV program. The complete name of Bent Fabric is Bent Fabricius-Bjerre, he had the honor to perform before the Danish royalty. His "Alley Cat" dragged in a Grammy award in 1963 for best Rock and Roll performance.
7. I've got to admit that I love Rowlf from the "Muppet Show", even if he is a dog. One of his great performances was a song about a cat. The song was quite an old one, in fact it was written by Harry S. Miller in 1893. An old Mr. Johnson (or little Benny in the "Muppet Show") tries all kind of methods to get rid of a cat. But what happens all the time?

Answer: The cat came back

In case of the Muppet show, the cat even survived fired out of a cannon, something the Great Gonzo loved to do sometimes in the show, ask Waldorf and Statler.

Miller let the cat die, but even as a ghost the cat came back.
8. Now take a look on Vietnamese Astrology. The Chinese choose the rabbit, the Vietnamese took the cat. Which Scottish artist released a whole album with his quite successful title track called "Year of the Cat"? "Well she looks at you so cooly and her eyes shine like the moon and the sea she comes in incense and patchouli so you take her to find what's waiting inside the year of the cat"

Answer: Al Stewart

Alistair Ian Stewart, born 1945, let his musical cat out of the bag in the year 1976. It was engineered by Alan Parsons. The single "Year of the Cat" was his first US Top ten single.

Donovan is best known for songs like "Atlantis" and "Universal Soldier". Midge Ure was leader singer of Ultravox and co-wrote "Do They Know it's Christmas" (Band Aid).

Mr. McKeown raised his voice for the Bay City Rollers (Bye, bye Baby).
9. "And I give her some old chat But it's not like that on the TV When it's cool for cats It's cool for cats - Cool for cats" Being of Egyptian origin cats usually don't like it cool. So this is definitively a proverbial cat. Who sung about this cool cats in 1979?

Answer: Squeeze

For once, Jools Holland didn't sing the lead vocals, lyricist Chris Difford was at the mike. And it became the greatest chart success for the group Squeeze with a UK number two.

"Cool for Cats" was one of the first music shows on British TV, starting 1956 and ending a few years later, seemingly having left enough impression to be memorialized in this song.
10. In the year of 1993 a album with the title "Meowy Christmas" sold over a 100,000 copies in the first four weeks. On the oeuvre you are able to listen to songs like "Deck the Halls" with additional cats meowing. Who was responsible for this?

Answer: Jingle Cats

And behold, one day in December 1991 in Hollywood, USA, a cat named Cheesepuff walked into the recording studio while there was a recording of "Jingle Bells" on the way. Cheesepuff started singing -ahem- meowing to "Jingle Bells". Well, this is the story told by Wikipedia.

Mike Spalla, the sound engineer working there recorded the cat performance and made it fit for airplay. It was played that year, but the real success started in 1992.

1993 followed "Meowy Christmas", 1994 "Here Comes Santa Claws" and so on. I wonder how much Cheesepuff did get for his performance?
