Written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, originally recorded by the Raindrops (actually Ellie Greenwich with two backup singers), "Hanky Panky" became a number one hit when revamped and released by Tommy James and the Shondells. The record topped the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed in the chart for fifteen weeks.

The song was a top ten in Australia reaching number three and in the UK the song made the top twenty.

The biggest groups in Australia in 1966 were Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs, Ray Brown and The Whispers, The Twilights, The Bee Gees and The Easybeats. The Easybeats took an EP titled "Easyfever" to the top of the singles chart in 1966, featuring the songs "I'll Make You Happy", "Too Much", "A Very Special Man" and Trying so Hard". As the Easybeats were still in Australia at this time their music did not chart anywhere else other than New Zealand.
The Easybeats met each other at a migrant facility in Sydney's Western suburbs and formed in mid-1964.
