Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "You Keep Me Hangin' On"
Answer: The Supremes
The Supremes made the top of the Billboard Hot 100 yet again, this time with "You Keep Me Hangin' On". The record was number one for two weeks in November 1966. In the UK the Supremes made it to number eight and in Australia it only reached number 45.
The song however did not fade away. In late 1967 English Rockers Vanilla Fudge, took their reworked version of the song to number eighteen on the UK chart, 60 on the Billboard Hot 100 and again in 1968 to number six. In August of 1968 Vanilla Fudge took the song to number one in Australia.
In 1987 Kim Wilde took her version to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Australian charts. In the UK, her home charts, the song was a number two hit.
2. "Michelle"
Answer: The Overlanders
British trio The Overlanders took a song from the Beatles' "Rubber Soul" album, namely "Michelle" and took it to the top of the British pop chart. The record did not chart in the USA and made it to number two in Australia. Ironically, they were kept at number two by the Beatles with "Day Tripper".
3. "Ooh La La / Ain't Nobody Home"
Answer: Normie Rowe
Normie Rowe had a double sided number one hit in Australia with "Ooh La La" / "Ain't Nobody Home" in 1966. The record received some airplay on the pirate stations in Europe but did not chart anywhere but Australia and New Zealand.
4. "Out of Time"
Answer: Chris Farlowe
"Out of Time" was first recorded by the Rolling Stones and included on their "Aftermath" album. British vocalist Chris Farlowe was offered the song by Mick Jagger. Jagger went on to produce the song for Chris Farlowe, and with its lush orchestral backing, it became his first and only number one hit. The record did not chart in the USA. The song made it to number eleven in Australia.
Chris Farlowe charted three more songs in Australia all written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.
5. "With a Girl Like You"
Answer: The Troggs
The Troggs scored a number one hit when "With a Girl Like You" topped the British chart. The Troggs also had "Wild Thing" and "I Can't Control Myself" make number two on the British chart in 1966. "With a Girl Like You" hit the top ten in Australia peaking at number seven. On the Billboard Hot 100 the record made it to number thirty one.
6. "When a Man Loves a Woman"
Answer: Percy Sledge
Soul singer Percy Sledge took "When a Man Loves a Woman" to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in May of 1966. The song was well received in Australia and was a number one hit in our southern state of Victoria and a number three hit nationally.
In the UK Percy Sledge got to number four with this record. Percy had another dozen or so songs make the billboard Hot 100 but never achieved the same chart success.
In 1991 big voiced crooner Michael Bolton had a number one hit with "When a Man Loves a Woman".
7. "Monday, Monday"
Answer: The Mamas & the Papas
The Mamas & the Papas' second release and second top ten hit "Monday, Monday" was also their first and only number one hit. Their earlier hit and probably their most recognised song was "California Dreamin'" released earlier in 1966. "Monday, Monday" written by band member John Phillips was a top ten hit in the UK peaking at number three and in Australia the song, also a top ten, made it to the number six position.
8. "My Love"
Answer: Petula Clark
Petula Clark, always a favourite down under, took "My Love" to number five on the Australian Chart. She fared better in the USA making the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in February of 1966. In the UK "My Love" reached number four.
The song was written by Tony Hatch who had written some of Petula's earlier hits
including, "Downtown", "I Know a Place" and "Round Every Corner". In 1970 country music star Sonny James took "My Love" to the top of the Billboard Country music chart for three weeks.
Sonny James, in a thirty plus year chart career from 1953 to 1983 placed 82 singles on the Billboard country chart with 46 making the top ten and twenty three of those went to the top. Incredibly between 1967 and 1971 Sonny had sixteen consecutive number one country hits. Sonny James and Tab Hunter competed with each other for the number one spot on the pop chart for seven weeks in early 1957 with their respective versions of "Young Love". (I'm sure Tab Hunter would not mind me noting that Sonny James was a much better singer than he).
9. "Nowhere Man / Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)"
Answer: The Beatles
The Beatles had another double sided hit, with "Nowhere Man/Norwegian Wood" making the top of the Australian chart in 1966. The songs are from the album "Rubber Soul" and were not released as singles in the UK. In the USA "Nowhere Man" was released with "What Goes On" as the flipside. That single made it to number three on the Billboard Hot 100.
10. "No Milk Today"
Answer: Herman's Hermits
Herman's Hermits with the catchy "No Milk Today" made it to number one on the Australian chart in 1966. In the UK the record was a top ten peaking at number seven while over in the USA the song was not released as a single until 1967 when it reached number thirty five.
The song was composed by prolific pop tunesmith, Graham Gouldman, later of 10cc, who also wrote "Listen People" for Herman's Hermits.
