And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgement of all wrong;
They decide and the shotgun sings the song."
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. I love the 'outro' on this track but the beginning's pretty good too!
Here's how it starts:

"In the white room with black curtains near the station.
Blackroof country, no gold pavements, tired starlings.
Silver horses ran down moonbeams in your dark eyes.
Dawnlight smiles on you leaving, my contentment."
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. A tremendous narrative track begins like this:

"Goodbye, little Robin-Marie
Don't try following me
Don't cry, little Robin-Marie
'Cause you know I'm coming home soon.

My ship's leaving on a three-year tour
The next tide will take us from shore
Windlaced, gather in sail and spray
On a search for the mighty sperm whale."

Do you know who sang it?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. "And what costume shall the poor girl wear
To all tomorrow's parties?
A hand-me-down dress from who knows where,
To all tomorrow's parties.
And where will she go and what shall she do
When midnight comes around?
She'll turn once more to Sunday's clown
And cry behind the door."

These lines are sung by whom?
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. "Yeah, said it's all right
I won't forget
All the times I've waited patiently for you
And you'll do just what you choose to do
And I will be alone again tonight my dear"

Which Californian band delivers these lines?

Question 8 of 10
8. "Now, when the day goes to sleep and the full moon looks,
The night is so black that the darkness cooks,
Don't you come creepin around - makin' me do things I dont want to

Can't believe that you need my love so bad
Come sneakin' around tryin' to drive me mad
Bustin, in on my dreams - making me see things I don't wanna see."

Which blues-based band sang these lines?

Question 9 of 10
9. After a great intro on Hammond organ, this song begins like this:

Bullets flying, taking toll."

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you don't know this one, you've clicked on the wrong quiz! Your starter for ten, who is this? "There's a lady who's sure All that glitters is gold,"

Answer: Led Zeppelin

What to say? Always in the top five in any top rock songs poll, usually number one. I guess the only talking point is what to call the album that "Stairway to Heaven" first appeared on? Led Zeppelin IV, Four Symbols, Untitled? Answers on a postcard please.
2. "Generals gathered in their masses, Just like witches at black masses, Evil minds that plot destruction Sorcerers of death's construction." Whose opening lyrics are these?

Answer: Black Sabbath

Whisper it gently; I'm not a huge fan of fellow Brummies, Black Sabbath but "War Pigs" is just an awesome number. It was track one on their second album "Paranoid". Many people rate "Iron Man" on the same album as Sabbath's best track but "War Pigs" does it for me.
3. Angry young men? Well disillusioned certainly, who are these guys? "We'll be fighting in the streets, With our children at our feet, And the morals that they worship will be gone. And the men who spurred us on Sit in judgement of all wrong; They decide and the shotgun sings the song."

Answer: The Who

I was fortunate enough to see The Who on the "Who's Next" tour and this number, "Won't Get Fooled Again" was one of the many highlights of the show. The album went to number one in the charts and a shortened version of this track reached number nine in the singles chart.
4. I love the 'outro' on this track but the beginning's pretty good too! Here's how it starts: "In the white room with black curtains near the station. Blackroof country, no gold pavements, tired starlings. Silver horses ran down moonbeams in your dark eyes. Dawnlight smiles on you leaving, my contentment."

Answer: Cream

Eric Clapton's guitar fade-out, I never want to stop, just magic. Also as a keen bird-watcher I also like this track as it's the only song I know with 'starlings' in the lyric, if you know of another one, let me know.
5. A tremendous narrative track begins like this: "Goodbye, little Robin-Marie Don't try following me Don't cry, little Robin-Marie 'Cause you know I'm coming home soon. My ship's leaving on a three-year tour The next tide will take us from shore Windlaced, gather in sail and spray On a search for the mighty sperm whale." Do you know who sang it?

Answer: Mountain

This is Mountain's title track from their album "Nantucket Sleighride". It is based on a rather macabre true story about a group of whalers stranded at sea. Bassist Felix Pappalardi, (who had previously produced the Cream album "Disraeli Gears"), was shot and killed in 1983.
6. "And what costume shall the poor girl wear To all tomorrow's parties? A hand-me-down dress from who knows where, To all tomorrow's parties. And where will she go and what shall she do When midnight comes around? She'll turn once more to Sunday's clown And cry behind the door." These lines are sung by whom?

Answer: The Velvet Underground featuring Nico

Now regarded as a classic, this album did not sell well on release.
"For All Tomorrow's Parties" was sung by Nico, some of the other tracks on the album were sung by Lou Reed and by John Cale.
7. "Yeah, said it's all right I won't forget All the times I've waited patiently for you And you'll do just what you choose to do And I will be alone again tonight my dear" Which Californian band delivers these lines?

Answer: Love

"Alone Again Or"; the opening track from Love's classic album "Forever Changes" which is forever in my car's stereo!
Sadly Arthur Lee died in 2006.
8. "Now, when the day goes to sleep and the full moon looks, The night is so black that the darkness cooks, Don't you come creepin around - makin' me do things I dont want to Can't believe that you need my love so bad Come sneakin' around tryin' to drive me mad Bustin, in on my dreams - making me see things I don't wanna see." Which blues-based band sang these lines?

Answer: Fleetwood Mac

There were definitely two versions of Fleetwood Mac. They started out as a blues band featuring the sublime guitar work of Peter Green before the band split and decamped to California where there was a change of personnel and musical direction. This number " The Green Manalishi (With the Two-Prong Crown)" came from the earlier incarnation and reached number ten in 1970.
9. After a great intro on Hammond organ, this song begins like this: "Sweet child in time, you'll see the line, The line that's drawn between the good and the bad See the blind man shooting at the world, Bullets flying, taking toll."

Answer: Deep Purple

This track comes from Deep Purple's seminal album "Deep Purple in Rock". It is pretty much all high-octane stuff but this track "Sweet Child in Time" is slightly more reflective. How Ian Gillan screams those high notes I'll never know.
10. "Cat's foot, iron claw, Neuro-surgeons scream for more At paranoia's poison door Twenty-first Century schizoid man." What a great opening! Who sang it?

Answer: King Crimson

King Crimson's first album "In the Court of the Crimson King" opens with this number, "21st Century Schizoid Man", which is just a terrific cacophony of sound. The rest of the album is rather more reflective.
