Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Back in 1962 "Speedy Gonzales" had to rush down to the cantina. What was the hurry?

Answer: they were giving "green stamps" with tequila

If you ever run for office don't let them find this record in your collection. Aside from the "tequila green stamps" there are the "loads of roaches in the hall" and "slapping mud on the adobe." Pat Boone once did this song (lip sync) on a Dick Clark show. Clark wore a sombrero and poncho and "did" the Speedy Gonzales parts. Yikes! Charting as high as Number Six, it was Pat's 37th and final Top 40 hit.
2. That demanding Joanie Sommers knew what she wanted in her man. "I want a brave man... I want a cave man!" Well, that was direct enough! What song was it?

Answer: Johnny Get Angry

"Johnny.." was her only Top 40 record, reaching Number Seven in the Summer of '62. The talented Joanie was much more popular than her meager Top 40 hit output would indicate. She appeared on numerous TV variety shows of the day and released a number of well received albums. She also found success with a number of commercials she did for Pepsi.
3. Poor Charlie Drake. He just couldn't get his boomerang to come back... as much as he practiced. Say, just how long did he practice anyway?

Answer: til he was black in the face

The original of "My Boomerang Won't Come Back" had the line "practiced 'til I was black in the face." It was quickly replaced with the better received "practiced 'til I was blue in the face." Charlie had several hits in his native England, but this was his only U.S. hit; it reached Number 21 in early 1962.
4. It was back in '61 that The Olympics introduced us to "Little Pedro." Why did he have to "fight de bool?"

Answer: to win the governor's daughter

Out of Los Angeles, The Olympics are probably most famous for their Top Ten hit "Western Movies." Lots of good records, but limited success. Originally named The Challengers, they had to change names when it became known that another group already had the name.
5. "A pretty woman makes her husband look small... very often causes his downfall..." Who imparted these words of wisdom in 1963?

Answer: Jimmy Soul

The song was "If You Wanna Be Happy." It reached Number One and made Jimmy verrrry happy. He never had another hit. If "a pretty woman makes her husband look small.." just how teeny-tiny did Elizabeth Taylor make Eddie Fisher look?
6. Jack Jones had a handful of hits. Mostly innocuous pleasant little nothings. In late '63 he did, however, manage one of the most "cringe-worthy" songs of all time. Which one?

Answer: Wives and Lovers

OK, lots of times you might say "Oh big deal with that P C stuff!" This song, however, deserves any scorn it gets. "Hey little girl, comb your hair... fix your make-up..." Jack knows that if you don't keep up appearances... well... "men they will always be men.." This wasn't even fun like the Jimmy Soul song... but it made Number 14 on the Billboard charts and was Jack's biggest hit.
7. What was Fatima doing when "Ahab the Arab" spotted her?

Answer: laying on a zebra skin rug

According to Ray Stevens, she was laying there with "bells on her fingers, rings on her toes, a bone in her nose.." Sounds lovely. "Ahab the Arab" was the first of several Top Ten hits. Ray won a Grammy as Male Vocalist of the Year for 1970, largely based on his recording of "Everything is Beautiful" which was one of his chart-toppers.
8. Stalking seemed to be the theme of the 1963 classic "I Will Follow Him." Who had the U.S. hit?

Answer: Peggy March

"... there isn't an ocean too deep... a mountain so high it can keep, keep me away..." Peggy (then known as Little Peggy March) was only 15 when she had the hit. Very popular in Germany, Peggy moved there in 1969 and enjoyed a successful stage, TV, and concert career for many years before moving back to the States.
9. Back in 1959 we were treated to Johnny Preston and his tale of ill-fated Indian lovers. Poor Running Bear. How much did he love Little White Dove?

Answer: with a love big as the sky

Those poor kids ended up in the Happy Hunting Ground. Nice stereotype. This was Johnny's first hit record and it spent three weeks at the top of the charts. It was written by J.P. Richardson aka The Big Bopper.
10. This comedian was an overnight sensation in 1962. His LP won a Grammy as Album of the Year and topped the Billboard Charts for 12 weeks. A year later some people were denying they ever liked him; some even thought it might be a good idea to gather up his LPs and have them destroyed. Who was this unwitting victim of history?

Answer: Vaughn Meader

His LP "The First Family" was a smash hit with clever skits revolving around the Kennedy White House. The LP had run its course by the time Kennedy was assassinated. Suddenly, however, people were pretending that Meader had in some way insulted JFK. Basically people were trying to out-do each other in the "see how much I loved JFK" game... and Meader took the hit.

At a press conference JFK was asked how he liked the LP. Jack replied that he liked it but thought Meader sounded more like Bobby.
