Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did the name Rainbow come from?

Answer: The Rainbow Bar and Grill in Los Angeles, CA.

The name comes from the Rainbow bar and grill in L.A. While Ritchie Blackmore was still in Deep Purple and planning on leaving, he was drinking with the then Elf vocalist Ronnie James Dio, when the question appeared, "What are we going to call our new band?".' Legend has it that they looked up and saw the Rainbow sign, agreed, and a new band was born.
2. Who designed the cover for 'Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow'?

Answer: David Willardson

The cover was designed and drawn by David Willardson, who worked for Disney, which explains the cartoon feeling to it. Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio liked the cover. so they used it. Ken Kelly has nothing to do with 'Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow', he painted the cover for 'Rainbow Rising'.
3. What was the line-up for Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow?

Answer: Ritchie Blackmore/Ronnie James Dio/Craig Gruber/Gary Driscoll/Mickey Lee Soule

The original line-up was the band Elf, and Ritchie Blackmore. Blackmore/Dio/Bain/Powell and Carey was the line-up for 'Rainbow Rising'.
Blackmore/Dio/Daisley/Powell and Stone was the line-up for 'Long Live Rock N' Roll'.
Blackmore/Dio/Glover/Paice and Lord never existed as a group, it's Blackmore and Dio from Rainbow and Glover/Paice and Lord from Deep Purple mark II.
4. 'Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow' was mainly original songs, but it did contain two cover songs. One was 'Black Sheep Of The Family'. Who originally wrote this song?

Answer: Quartermass

Quartermass originally wrote the song, it was one of Ritchie Blackmore's favourites at the time. The song was intended to be the first single from the album, but the strength of the original material was released instead.
5. What was the first Rainbow single released in the UK, including the correct B-Side?

Answer: 'Man On The Silver Mountain' and 'Snake Charmer'

The first single released in the UK was 'Man On The Silver Mountain', the B-Side was 'Snake Charmer'. The single was released on Oyster in October of 1975.
6. "Let it shine on bright, hang him higher!" Which song features this lyric?

Answer: Sixteenth Century Greensleeves

In Ronnie James Dios own words from 'On Stage': "This is a story about a lady, with long greensleeves, who was kept in a tower by a knight, until one day the people saved her, back in the sixteenth century. To which Rainbow changed to read, 'Sixteenth Century Greensleeves'".
7. Which song features the following lyric: "She whipped out a card with big black letters"?

Answer: If You Don't Like Rock N' Roll

Definatly an oddball song from the album; however, still a good song all the same. 'Still I'm Sad' is an instrumental and the other two follow a medieval path.
8. Ritchie Blackmore still plays a song off this album live with his band Blackmore's Night. It is a little different now though. Which song is it?

Answer: The Temple Of The King

Ritchie Blackmore now plays a medieval version of 'The Temple Of The King', with Candice Night singing. Ronnie James Dio still plays 'Man On The Silver Mountain'. To my knowledge, 'Sixteenth Century Greensleeves' hasn't been played live for a long time and 'Lady Of The Lake' is off 'Long Live Rock N' Roll'.
9. Which member of Rainbow mark I passed away in 1987?

Answer: Gary Driscoll

Gary Driscoll was sadly murdered in New York in June of 1987. Cozy Powell has also passed away, but was never in Rainbow mark I.
10. Where was 'Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow' recorded?

Answer: Musicland Studios, Germany

'Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow' was recorded at Musicland Studios, Germany between the 20th of February and the 14th of March, 1975. It was produced by Ritchie Blackmore, Ronnie James Dio and Martin Birch, while the final mix was done by Birch alone.
Chateau Pelly De Cornfeld was where 'Down To Earth' was recorded. Grand Hotel was where the famous Deep Purple album, 'Machine Head', was recorded. No Rainbow or Deep Purple recordings were ever made at Abbey Road Studios.
