Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Phil and Don Everly were born in the 1930's. Which brother is the oldest?

Answer: Don

Phil was born in Chicago, IL on January 19, 1939. Don was born in Brownie, KY on February 1, 1937.
2. Which song was the first Everly Brothers hit to reach number one on the US pop charts?

Answer: Wake Up Little Susie

Although "Wake Up Little Susie" was the first number one single, it was not their first million seller. "Bye Bye Love" was the first million seller, but it only reached number two on the charts.
3. What record label did the Everly Brothers first sign with in the 1950's?

Answer: Columbia Records

This is a tough question because The Everly Brothers signed first with Columbia, but their first four singles didn't sell. Cadence Records was then persuaded to sign the boys. That magical time only lasted two years, but in that time they had a string of hits including "Wake Up Little Susie", "Bye Bye Love" and "All I Have to Do Is Dream".

They signed with Warner Bros. in February of 1960.
4. What band backed The Everly Brothers for the recording of "Two Yanks in England"?

Answer: The Hollies

Graham Nash, of the Hollies, had a huge amount of respect for The Everly Brothers. When they recorded "Two Yanks in England" in 1966, The Hollies were commissioned to help write and play back up to the boys. The album isn't considered one of the greatest Everly Brothers albums because it is mostly non-original recordings, but the combination of The Hollies with The Everly Brothers was plenty intriguing.
5. In 1973, The Everly Brothers had a major falling out and split ways for ten long years. The brothers reunited in September of 1983 for two shows which were recorded and released under the title "The Reunion Concert". In what city was this album recorded?

Answer: London

After being apart for ten years, The Everly Brothers patched up their differences and reunited for two shows on September 22 and 23, 1983 at London's Royal Albert Hall.
6. The Everly Brothers recorded an album in 1984 titled "EB 84". The album contained a song called "On the Wings of a Nightingale" which was a moderate hit in Britain, reaching number four on the British pop charts. Who penned this song?

Answer: Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney had been a long time fan of the group and wrote this song for them as a favor. This album also had a song written by Jeff Lynne, of Electric Light Orchestra fame titled "The Story of Me". Albert Lee played guitar and Dave Edmunds was the producer of the album.
7. What branch of the military did both Everly Brothers join in 1961?

Answer: The United States Marine Corps

Both brothers joined the Marines in 1961 and spent one year in uniform.
8. In 2003, The Everly Brothers joined forces with what group on the "Old Friends" concert tour?

Answer: Simon and Garfunkel

The "Old Frends" tour began in Wilkes-Barre, PA on October 16, 2003 and criss-crossed the United States a couple of times, finishing up in Tampa, FL on December 21, 2003.
9. The 1973 album "Stories We Could Tell" is a great album featuring some of the biggest names in popular music of the era. Which artist was not featured on this album?

Answer: George Harrison

The album featured songs written by Rod Stewart and Kris Kristofferson. The song "I'm Tired of Singing My Song in Las Vegas" was an Everly Brothers original telling the story of how frustrating it is having to repeatedly sing the same songs over and over again. No wonder the brothers split up later that year.
10. What fan of The Everly Brothers inducted them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as charter members in 1986?

Answer: Neil Young

It's fitting that a member of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young inducted The Everly Brothers as they were responsible for influencing nearly every band who used tight harmonies in their style. Neil Young was quite honored to be able to induct the mentors of so many groups.
