Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Roxette's first major worldwide hit?

Answer: The Look

Their big break, "The Look" was first brought to the USA from Sweden by an exchange student. Quickly gaining popularity, the song eventually reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and followed soon after by topping the charts in several other countries.
2. Roxette's first album "Pearls Of Passion" was released in Sweden in 1986, before their international success. How many songs from this album became top 20 hits in Sweden?

Answer: 3

The songs were "Neverending Love" (peaking at number three), "Goodbye To You" (peaking at number nine) and "Soul Deep" (peaking at number 18).
3. "Listen To Your Heart" topped the charts in which two countries?

Answer: USA and Canada

The song spent one week at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and two weeks at number one on the Canadian Singles Chart. The song was written by Per Gessle about being stuck between an old relationship and a new love. The band described having a second number one hit in the US as being "a wet dream for a Swedish band" and added that the song had originally been more or less made for Sweden.
4. Which was Roxette's biggest selling album?

Answer: Joyride

The follow-up to the successful album "Look Sharp", the album "Joyride" eventually became even more successful. This was due to many things, Per Gessle commented, such as that the timing was very good, and that what the band nearly accomplished on "Look Sharp" they had perfected on "Joyride".
5. The single "Joyride" was arguably Roxette's biggest hit. However, in which of these countries did it *not* reach number one?

Answer: UK

The single was number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, as well as the German and Australian singles charts, but only reached number four on the singles top 75 chart in the UK, where (surprisingly) they did not have any number one hits. The song, although sounding very simple, is actually very unusual and complex, as its speed and key both change several times.
6. What chart position did the song "Fading Like A Flower" peak at on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart?

Answer: Number two

The song reached number two, only just behind The Bangles' "Eternal Flame", which was number one at the time. It turned out to be their last of six songs to reach the US top two. Marie Fredriksson later commented "It's probably the most American-sounding song we ever did".
7. Which song, released as a single from the "Joyride" album, did Per Gessle, as quoted in an interview on the song in the "Don't Bore Us, Get To The Chorus" album notes, originally believe would become Roxette's biggest hit ever?

Answer: Spending My Time

Per Gessle commented that he believed this song would be their biggest hit ever. However, at that time, the EMI in America was making personnel changes that unfortunately caused a decline in popularity for the band. Nonetheless, the song did reach the top ten on the German and Canadian singles charts, and was a medium-sized hit in many countries elsewhere.
8. Which song was the second single to be released from the "Tourism" album in many countries?

Answer: Queen Of Rain

The Tourism album was a combination of live tracks and studio-recorded songs, many of which had been recorded during their "Join the Joyride" tour, where they had booked a studio whenever they had extra time.
Only three singles were eventually released, being "How Do You Do!" (becoming a major hit in Europe), "Queen Of Rain" (becoming a medium-sized hit in many countries), and an updated version of "Fingertips" ("Fingertips '93", which only became a minor hit). "The Rain" was not released as a single.
9. "Almost Unreal" was a medium-sized hit in many countries round the world, but in which of these countries, where it peaked at number seven, was it considered a particular success?

Answer: UK

"Almost Unreal" was one of Roxette's biggest hits in the UK, and Per Gessle commented on how this was a surprise. The song was originally meant for a Bette Midler movie, but for some reason ended up on the flop Super Mario Bros movie soundtrack. Marie Fredriksson was nine months pregnant when recording the vocals.
10. Their album "Crash! Boom! Bang!" -- Which of the following was the most successful single from the album, peaking at number one in Sweden and number three in Canada?

Answer: Sleeping In My Car

"Sleeping In My Car" became a major hit in several countries, staying on the singles chart for seven months in Canada. The song was written in an hour, after Per Gessle had realised the "Crash! Boom! Bang!" album was missing something, and had "too little P-O-P".
11. How many singles were released from the "Crash! Boom! Bang!" album in the UK?

Answer: 5

In total, five singles were released from this album in the UK, all of which charted. "Sleeping In My Car" reached number 14 on the UK singles chart, but did considerably better in many other countries. "Crash! Boom! Bang!", "Fireworks" and "Run To You" all made the UK top 30, and "Vulnerable" made the top 50.
12. The 1995 album "Don't Bore Us, Get To The Chorus" was a greatest hits compilation of many of Roxette's most successful songs to date. How many NEW songs were also added on it?

Answer: 4

These were "June Afternoon", "You Don't Understand Me", "She Doesn't Live Here Anymore" and "I Don't Want To Get Hurt".
Of these, the most successful was "You Don't Understand Me", reaching the top 10 in Finland and Sweden. This beautiful ballad was co-written by Desmond Child, who had also helped to write songs like the Baha Men's "Who Let The Dogs Out".
13. After their world tour and greatest hits album of 1995, Roxette took a break. But they were back in 1999 with their comeback album "Have A Nice Day". The lead single from this album re-affirmed their success in several countries, including the UK, Italy and Sweden. What was the name of this single?

Answer: Wish I Could Fly

"Wish I could Fly" made number four on the charts in Sweden, number eight in Italy and number 11 in the UK. The song was performed by the band on "Top Of The Pops".
At first, the idea behind this song was to experiment by putting together a drum loop with the sound of an orchestra, but quickly this developed into something bigger and better.
14. "Stars" was quite a shock for the fans as it presented a dramatic change in style. Many discos in Europe went wild about it. The song was a sizable hit in many countries, but in which of the following countries did it do BETTER than the lead single, "Wish I Could Fly"?

Answer: Germany

On the German Singles Chart, "Wish I Could Fly" peaked at number 26, but "Stars" peaked at number 23 and charted considerably longer. Overall the song was received positively, and helped maintain the success of their comeback album, "Have A Nice Day".
15. Roxette had no Billboard Hot 100 hits after 1995.

Answer: True

Roxette's success in North America and Australia was over by the late 1990s. However, they were still going strong in Europe and South America. Their "Have A Nice Day" album reached the top five in several countries and sold two million copies.
16. The album "Room Service" (released in 2001) reached number one on the albums chart in Sweden.

Answer: True

Roxette's popularity was still going strong in Sweden and indeed much of Europe at the turn of the 21st century. As well as being number one in Sweden, the album reached the top five in Switzerland, Germany and Austria.
17. Which was the most successful single from the "Room Service" album, which returned Roxette to the number one spot on the Swedish singles chart after seven years? (since "Sleeping In My Car")

Answer: The Centre Of The Heart

"The Centre Of The Heart" spent four weeks at the top of the Swedish Singles Chart, and also charted in many countries around Europe. "Real Sugar" was a minor hit in a few countries, while "Milk And Toast And Honey" performed slightly better than "Real Sugar". "Jefferson" was not released as a single anywhere.
18. "The Centre Of The Heart" and "Real Sugar" were the first two singles released from the "Room Service" album in Sweden. What was the third?

Answer: Milk And Toast And Honey

Per Gessle had the melody to this ballad in his head for a whole year before writing it down. Marie Fredriksson had to work harder on it to sing than any other Roxette song. The song was a hit in many European countries.
19. In 2002 and 2003 (respectively), two new greatest hits albums called "The Ballad Hits" and "The Pop Hits" were released. Which of these albums was the most successful, reaching number 11 in the UK and the top five in Sweden and The Netherlands?

Answer: The Ballad Hits

"The Ballad Hits" was a decent success, reaching the top ten in several European countries. "The Pop Hits", however, was less successful, due to lack of promotion due to Marie Fredriksson's illness.
20. What position did the 2006 single "One Wish" peak at in Spain?

Answer: Number three

The song peaked at a refreshing number three, proving that Roxette are still well and truly around and still having success.
