Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A popular country group of the 90s actually had a minor country hit called "See Ya". Who were they?

Answer: Confederate Railroad

"See Ya" only reached number 51 on the Billboard Hot Country Charts. The group's biggest hit was "Queen of Memphis". Lead singer Danny Shirley cites the late Waylon Jennings as his biggest influence.
2. Paul McCartney wrote a song called "Goodbye" which was a hit for one of his Apple label mates. Who was she?

Answer: Mary Hopkin

Welsh-born Mary Hopkin is best known for her recording of "Those Were The Days", which reached number one in the UK and number two on the American Billboard Hot 100. McCartney produced her debut album for Apple. It was called "Postcard". The Beatles also recorded "Goodbye" as a demo but it was never released, though a bootleg of the recording does exist.
3. In 1972 a very popular brother and sister duo had a hit with a song called "Goodbye To Love". Who were they?

Answer: Karen and Richard Carpenter

"Goodbye to Love" was composed by Richard Carpenter and John Farris. It peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the Billboard Easy Listening Chart in 1972. All three of the other choices were actual brother-sister acts.
4. What pop music legend co-wrote and sang "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"?

Answer: Sir Elton John

"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" was the title track of Elton John's seventh studio album. The original vinyl LP, released in 1973, was a double album but the CD is a single disc. Ben and Jerry's actually created an ice cream flavor called "Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road" in honor of the song. The single peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100.
5. In 1967, The Beatles topped the American charts with "Hello, Goodbye". Which of these albums was the song included on in the US?

Answer: Magical Mystery Tour

Paul McCartney was the sole writer of "Hello, Goodbye" even though it is credited as a Lennon-McCartney composition. According to Alistair Taylor, who worked for Brian Epstein, the song was inspired by an exercise where Paul would sing a word and Alistair would call out the opposite word.

However, the original working title was "Hello, Hello". Although music videos did not exist in 1967 a promotional film for the song was shown on "The Ed Sullivan Show".
6. Who wrote and sang the theme song for the movie "The Goodbye Girl"?

Answer: David Gates

David Gates was, of course, the leader of the popular 70s group Bread. He wrote and recorded "The Goodbye Girl" following the breakup of the group and it became the most successful record of his solo career. He lives in semi-retirement with his wife of over 50 years on their cattle ranch in Northern California.
7. Roger Whitaker had a big hit with the song "The Last Farewell" in 1975. What country does Roger hail from?

Answer: Kenya

Roger was born in Nairobi, Kenya. "The Last Farewell" was based on a poem sent to him by an Englishman named Ron Webster. It was recorded in 1971, but didn't gain prominence in the US until 1975 when an Atlanta radio station played it and was flooded with phone requests for it.
8. What musical features a "goodbye" song that begins "So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen goodbye"?

Answer: The Sound of Music

All of the choices were musicals composed by Rodgers and Hammerstein. "The Sound of Music" is based on the true story of the Von Trapp Family. "So Long, Farewell" is sung on a talent contest by the Von Trapp children as a vehicle for them to make their escape from Austria and the Nazis with their father and his new wife Maria.

As each child does his solo line and exits the stage the escape is successful.
9. The late John Denver used to open his concerts with a song sub-titled "Welcome to My Morning". But what was the official title of the song?

Answer: Farewell Andromeda

"Farewell Andromeda" was the title track of John's seventh studio album. It was released in June 1973. His grandmother gave him his first guitar at age 11. He began playing in clubs while he was in college.
10. A group called The Casinos had a big hit in the 60s called "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye". What artist scored a country hit in the 90s with a cover of the song?

Answer: Neal McCoy

"Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" was written by legendary singer/songwriter John D. Loudermilk. The Casinos' version peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967. Neal McCoy's version reached number seven on the Billboard country chart in 1996. The song has been covered by several artists, including Eddy Arnold, Andy Williams and Joss Stone, as well as Loudermilk himself.
