Robert Ford, a member of the Jeese James outlaw gang, made a deal with the governor of Missouri to kill Jesse James and collect the reward money for himself. On April 3, 1882, Ford held up his end of the deal by shooting James in the back of his head while visiting with him in James' home. Ford was arrested, tried, convicted, and sentenced to death for the deed, however, the governor did honor his part of the deal, also, and Ford was released two days before he was scheduled to die, receiving his reward as promised.

As for the song, while it was on the "B" side of "Grow Some Funk of Your Own", it received just as much airplay and peaked at number 14 on the pop chart in 1975 at the same time as the "A" side did.
