Berry has acknowledged that the song he wrote in 1955 is partly autobiographical. He has written at least thirty songs metnioning "Johnny B Goode". "Johnny B. Goode" was one of four American songs which were included on the "Voyager Golden Record" which was on the Voyager spacecraft that launched in 1977l. He performed "Johnny B Goode", backed by Bruce Springstein and the E Street Band, when he was inducted into the first class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in January, 1986. The song has been featured in several movies, including being performed by Marty McFly (Michael J Fox) in"Back to the Future" (1985), although the song in that film was actually sung by Mark Campbell. The song has received numerous accolades including being ranked seventh in 2010 on the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and one of the 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The song has been covered many times and has been a hit for such artists as Buck Owens (No 1 on Billboard Hot Country Sides in 1969), and Jimi Hendrix (posthumously on the UK Singles Chart in 1972). Some of the cover artists are AC/DC, Aerosmith, The Beatles, Bon Jovi, the Carpenters, John Denver, Celine Dion, Bill Haley & His Comets, Buddy Hlly, Elton John, B B King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Meat Loaf, Elvis Presley and Cliff Richard, just to name a few.
