Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From which UK city were Slade from?

Answer: Wolverhampton

Slade were lead singer and guitarist Neville "Noddy" Holder, drummer Don Powell, guitarist Dave Hill and bass guitarist Jimmy Lea. Jimmy also played the violin and keyboards. The band were formed in 1966 as The N'Betweens, before becoming Ambrose Slade and then reverting to the name Slade. Early recordings by the N'Betweens and Ambrose Slade are very rare and collectable! In their early days, the band had very short hair and a "Skinhead" image, and early pictures show them in boots, jeans and braces.
2. Slade were managed by former Jimi Hendrix manager Chas Chandler. Which 60s band did Chas play for?

Answer: The Animals

Chas Chandler played bass guitar for The Animals, whose hits include "I'm Crying", "Don't Bring Me Down" and the classic "House Of The Rising Sun". Chas managed the legendary Jimi Hendrix in the late 1960s, before becoming manager to Slade. Chas Chandler sadly died in 1996.
3. What was the title of Slade's first UK chart entry?

Answer: Get Down And Get With It

"Wild Winds Are Blowing" and "Shape Of Things To Come" were early Slade singles that failed to chart. "Get Down And Get With It" stomped it's way to number 16 in 1971, closely followed by the band's first number one, "Coz I Luv You". The habit of misspelt titles caused uproar in the media and classrooms, with the band being held responsible for teaching the youth of the nation bad English!
4. Following their first chart success, the hits and number ones for Slade just kept on coming. The band's fourth number one was "Cum On Feel The Noise" in 1973. The song was covered by American band Quiet Riot in 1983, but which British band performed a pretty good version in 1996?

Answer: Oasis

Remaining faithful to the original, Oasis sang "Cum On Feel The Noize" as a track on their CD single "Don't Look Back In Anger", a number one in 1996.
5. Who did Slade say "Gudbuy" to in 1971?

Answer: Jane

"Gudbuy T' Jane" reached number two in late 1972. The majority of Slade's hits were written by Noddy Holder and Jim Lea.
6. Slade guitarist Dave Hill was known for his high heeled boots, pudding bowl haircut and a custom built guitar with what word built into its body?

Answer: Superyob

Dave's Fender guitars were built especially for him in England by guitar maker John Birch. Dave was also known for his garish costumes, and wearing glitter on his face! (Well, it was the 70s)
7. Reminiscent of their own rise to fame, Slade made a film about a band in 1975. What was it's title?

Answer: Slade In Flame

"Slade In Flame" is often cited as one of the best pop music films ever made. Some reviewers of the time even remarked how amazed they were that Slade did a reasonable job of acting! The film spawned the hit singles "Far Far Away" and "How Does It Feel?" A book, "Slade In Flame" was also issued in conjunction with the film.
8. The biggest selling single of Slade's career was a classic Christmas song, and a number one for the band in 1973. What was it called?

Answer: Merry Xmas Everybody

Still played endlessy on the radio each Christmas, "Merry Xmas Everybody" was the UK Christmas number one in 1973. "Step Into Christmas" was a hit for Elton John, whilst "Merry Christmas Everyone" and "Last Christmas" were hits for Shakin' Stevens and Wham!
9. Who was Slade's 1985 single "Do You Believe In Miracles?" written as a tribute to?

Answer: Bob Geldof

"It was in the Autumn of 84, going live through 85, when he made the greatest show on earth, to help a country to survive" were part of the lyrics to this homage. (Written by Holder and Lea of course!) The song was inspired by Boomtown Rats singer Bob Geldof, who, touched by the plight of those people starving in Ethiopia, started the Band Aid and Live Aid projects of 1985.
10. What was the title of Noddy Holder's autobiography published in 1999?

Answer: Who's Crazee Now?

And an excellent read it is too! For an insight into the sounds of the 70s and the story of Slade, the book is a very enjoyable look at the past. Noddy Holder has become something of a television and radio personality since leaving Slade, and has appeared on TV shows such as "A Question Of Pop" and "The Grimleys", in which he starred as a school music teacher called Mr Holder. Noddy was awarded the MBE in 2000, for his services to music.
