Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sugarloaf had a top five hit in 1970 about a young woman with a beautiful pair of eyes. Do you remember the name of that tune?

Answer: Green-Eyed Lady

"Green-Eyed Lady" reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and ranked number 30 on Billboard's Year-End singles chart. Following the success of their initial effort Sugarloaf somewhat faded from view, but came back strong five years later. In 1975 their song "Don't Call Us, We'll Call You" reached number nine on the Billboard Hot 100.

It spent 21 weeks on the chart, four weeks longer than their bigger hit "Green-Eyed Lady".
2. The Guess Who's "American Woman" was a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970. Do you know who provided the lead vocals on this tune?

Answer: Burton Cummings

Burton Cummings was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He joined the Guess Who in early 1966 as a replacement for recently departed keyboardist Bob Ashley. Cummings assumed the role of lead singer in May of 1966 when original front man Chad Allan left the group. "American Woman" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in May of 1970 and stayed there for three weeks.

The song also was ranked number three on the Hot 100 Year-End singles chart.
3. "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" was a top ten hit for this one-named singer. Do you know who it is?

Answer: Melanie

Melanie Safka was born and raised in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens, New York. In 1969 her manager-husband, Peter Schekeryk, got her on the bill at the Woodstock Music Festival. It was raining when Melanie started her set at 10:50 pm. During her performance the crowd lit candles, which had been provided to them by the Festival's organizers.

The scene inspired Melanie to write "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)". The song peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100.
4. Which Ray Stevens' hit from 1970 started with these lyrics? "Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in his sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world."

Answer: Everything is Beautiful

Stevens' two daughters and the second grade class from Oak Hill Elementary School in Nashville, Tennessee, sang these opening lines of the song. Ray Stevens, known more for his comedic tunes such as "Ahab the Arab" and "Gitarzan", showed his serious side on this effort. "Everything is Beautiful" was his first number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 1974 he reached number one again with a song about a very peculiar fad at the time, "The Streak".
5. In a number one song from 1970, who or what was Neil Diamond referring to when he sang "You make me feel like a guitar hummin'"?

Answer: Cracklin' Rosie

The lyrics of the song might suggest to some that it's about a woman of the night, but that's not so. In fact "Cracklin' Rosie" is a bottle of wine. Diamond got the idea for the song from a folk story of an Indian tribe in Northern Canada. He told David Wild of Rolling Stone: "On Saturday nights when they go out, the guys all get their girl; the guys without girls get a bottle of Cracklin' Rosie, that's their girl for the weekend." This song was Neil Diamonds first number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
6. This song, from the album "Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5", was released as a single in the US in October of 1969. It was the first of four number one hits for the Jackson 5 on the billboard Hot 100 from 1970. What's the name of the song?

Answer: I Want You Back

"I Want You Back" reached number one in January of 1970. "ABC" and "The Love You Save" from the album "ABC" and "I'll Be There" from the album "Third Album" also reached the top spot that year. All four songs also topped the Billboard R&B singles chart in 1970. Even though the Jackson 5 went on to achieve great success throughout the '70s, "I'll Be There" was their last number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
7. Rare Earth was one of the first acts with an all-white line-up to sign with Motown Records. In 1970 they had a top ten hit with this remake of a Temptations' tune. Can you name that tune?

Answer: Get Ready

Although Rare Earth was not the first white band signed by Motown, they were by far the most successful up to that point. "Get Ready" reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the group's biggest hit. The single was edited down from a 20-minute recording that occupied one side of their debut album. Later in the year their version of The Tempations' "(I Know) I'm Losing You" peaked at number seven on Billboard's Hot 100.
8. 1970 had more than a few one-hit wonders and one of the very best was this song by the Jaggerz. It's about a guy who seduces women with his smooth talking ways. Do you remember this tune?

Answer: The Rapper

"The Rapper", written by band member Dominic Ierace, peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The Jaggerz continued to record and release music through the mid '70s, but never achieved the same success as their signature song. The group disbanded in 1977. Ierace, better known as Donnie Iris, left the group in 1976 and had continued success. first as a member of the band Wild Cherry and later as a solo artist in the early '80s.
9. The Kinks had a top ten hit in 1970 about an encounter with an alleged transvestite. Do you know his/her name?

Answer: Lola

Due to the controversial lyrics some radio stations began fading the track out before the lyrics "Well I'm not the world's most masculine man, but I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man and so is Lola", which was considered a bit risque for the time.

Despite its subject matter the BBC banned the song for a different reason. The original recording had the word "Coca Cola" in the lyrics, but because of BBC Radio's policy against product placement, Ray Davies had to fly from New York to London to change those words to "cherry cola" for the single release.
10. This chart topping effort from Edwin Starr is widely considered to be one of the greatest protest songs ever written. To what song am I referring?

Answer: War

"War" spent three weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 in August of 1970 and was ranked number five on the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles chart. It was the most successful and well-known record of Starr's career, which spanned 30 years. Bruce Springsteen released a live version of the song and it reached number eight on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1986.
