Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sugarland featuring Taylor Swift in 2018, Styx in 1979 and Take That in 1993. All had hits with a song that shared its title with the other two, but what was it?

Answer: Babe

"Babe" (1979) by Styx is possibly the best known of these three tracks as it reached the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in USA as well as being the band's only top ten hit in UK, Australia and New Zealand.
"Babe" (1993) by Take That hit number one in UK, Ireland and Japan but failed to chart in North America,Australia or New Zealand, while "Babe" (2018) by Sugarland was co-written by Taylor Swift, who also contributed vocals to the track, which was a top ten hit on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in USA.
2. An Australian hit for The Mavis's in 1998 and a UK hit for Kym Marsh in 2003 share their name with Godley & Creme's only Billboard Hot 100 hit in USA. What is the word that links these songs?

Answer: Cry

Kevin Godley and Lol Creme tasted major success while members of 10cc including two UK number one singles, but failed to recreate that success when they left the band. Their biggest hit was "Under Your Thumb" which reached number three in UK charts in 1981. "Cry" (1985) was the duo's only U.S. hit, and actually charted higher on the Billboard Hot 100 than it did in UK, where they were much more well known.
The Mavis's song, "Cry" (1998) from their "Pink Pills" album of the same year was the band's first major success and seemed to point to a bright future, but the two follow up singles from the album, "Lever" and "Puberty Song" (both 1998) struggled to crack the top 100 in their native Australia.
Kym Marsh was a member of UK band Hear'Say before leaving in 2002 to pursue a solo career, but didn't manage to find the success she had with the band, her biggest hit being "Cry" 2003, compared to the two UK number one singles she had with Hear'Say.
In 2005, she placed her singing career on hold to become an actor and found great success, when after a few small parts, she was cast in "Coronation Street" in 2006, playing Michelle Connor, a part she would play for the next 13 years.
3. Aaliyah reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 with this track in 2003, which shares its name with a 1942 Dinah Shore number eight hit on the same chart and the Rolling Stones' last Billboard Hot 100 number one of the 70s. What is the title?

Answer: Miss You

After a few good and perhaps not so good albums, the Rolling Stones returned to form with "Some Girls" (1978) which contained tracks such as "Respectable", "Shattered", "Beast Of Burden" and "Miss You", which was the album opener. Apart from reaching the top in USA and Canada, "Miss You" was a top ten chart hit in UK, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden and Netherlands among others.
Dinah Shore had many Billboard top ten hits in USA, and her version of "Miss You", which was written in 1929, certainly stood tall among the many cover versions of this song, which include artists such as Bill Haley, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby and Flanagan and Allen.
"Miss You" by Aaliyah was originally to be included on her 2001 album, "Aaliyah" but was left off and not released until her posthumous 2002 album "I Care 4 U", from which it was the lead single. It was her second posthumous single following the release of "Rock The Boat" (2002) after her tragic death in a plane crash aged just 22.
4. Three very different artists, but all released a song with the same title. Punk band The Damned in 1979, country band The Oak Ridge Boys in 1983 and Sara Bareilles with her debut single in 2007. Which song links them all?

Answer: Love Song

Of the three artists, Sara Bareilles certainly found the most success with her "Love Song" (2007) hitting the top ten on the charts in Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands, UK, USA on the Billboard Hot 100 and Canada where it went all the way to number one.
The Oak Ridge Boys saw their "Love Song" (1983) also hit number one in Canada, but this was on the Country Tracks chart rather than on the national chart, and their track also went to the top spot on the Billboard Country chart in USA.
"Love Song" (1979) by The Damned was the band's first UK top 20 hit but unfortunately wasn't a hit anywhere else. The band would have to wait until 1986 and their cover of "Eloise" for success like that.
5. Which 1963 Billboard Hot 100 number one for The Angels shares its name with a very poorly rated (doubtless destined to become a cult classic) 1993 zombie movie featuring cameos from Matthew Fox, Matthew McConaughey and Philip Seymour Hoffman?

Answer: My Boyfriend's Back

"My Boyfriend's Back" spent three weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100 in USA in 1963 and is notable for being one of the first recordings to feature Ronnie James Dio, playing horns on this track, but who would go on to be vocalist for rock bands Rainbow, Black Sabbath and his own band, named Dio.
Although The Angels managed three other Billboard Hot 100 top 40 entries, "My Boyfriend's Back" was their only top ten hit.
The movie, "My Boyfriend's Back" (1993) took its name from the song, but was nowhere near as successful, generating one bad review after another. It told the story of a high school boy who, after being killed, returns as a zombie for a date with his sweetheart.
Critics described it as "awful", "disastrous" and "nonsensical", with Jeff Shannon of the Seattle Times perhaps summing it up best, when he wrote, "Simply put, absolutely none of it works".
6. A 1977 Canadian number three hit for Alice Cooper, shares its name with a Tammy Wynette Billboard Hot Country chart number one from 1976 and an American Billboard Hot 100 number five hit for Lifehouse in 2006. What is the title of these songs?

Answer: You And Me

"You And Me" (2006) by Lifehouse provided the band with their second Billboard Hot 100 top five hit in USA, after 2000s "Hanging by a Moment", but while that track was also a hit in UK, "You And Me" failed to chart there.
Alice Cooper's track, "You And Me" (1977) also wasn't a hit in UK, but hit the top ten on USA's Billboard Hot 100 chart as well as on the Canadian RPM chart and the Australian charts. In 1978, Cooper performed the track as a duet with Miss Piggy while a guest on "The Muppet Show".
"You And Me" (1976) by Tammy Wynette provided her with her 16th solo number one on the Billboard Hot Country chart in USA, and surprisingly her last, although she continued to have top 20 hits for the next decade.
7. In 1999, The Cranberries had a number one in Spain with a track that shares its name with Eric Clapton's last Billboard Hot 100 top ten hit of the 70s and a 2018 UK chart topper from Calvin Harris and Sam Smith. What were these tracks called?

Answer: Promises

Eric Clapton's "Promises" peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 in USA and was most successful, nationally, on the Canadian chart where it reached number seven. On specialist charts, the track surprisingly reached number one on the Norwegian country chart.
"Promises" (1999) by The Cranberries was a top 20 hit in UK, Italy Iceland and Canada as well as hitting the top in Spain. Although the band continued to release music right up to the death of vocalist Dolores O'Riordan in 2018, "Promises" would be their last top 20 hit in their native Ireland.
When "Promises" by Calvin Harris and Sam Smith hit the top in 2018, it became the tenth UK number one for Harris and the seventh for Smith. The track also went to number one in Iceland, Israel, Croatia and Poland as well as hitting the top in the dance charts of many countries.
Although the track is credited to Harris and Smith, the female vocals on the track are from Canadian Jesse Reyez, who also co-wrote the song.
8. Which medical condition did Olivia Newton John have a hit with in 1982, that also provided chart success for Trey Songz in 2012 and Demi Lovato in 2013?

Answer: Heart Attack

"Heart Attack" (1982) by Olivia Newton John was a huge hit in Canada, South Africa and on the Billboard Hot 100 in USA, where it became her eleventh solo top ten hit, in addition to three top ten duets, two with John Travolta and one with Electric Light Orchestra. Trey Songz wasn't quite as successful with his track, "Heart Attack" in 2012, but it did crack the top 40 in UK and on the Billboard Hot 100 in USA, while the Demi Lovato song from 2013, also titled "Heart Attack" gave her a top ten hit on charts in Brazil, Venezuela, Canada, UK and USA where it became her third top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
9. In 1973, the band comprising Paul Rodgers, Mick Ralphs, Simon Kirke and Boz Burrell released the final single from their debut album. The single, the album and the band all have the same name but what is it?

Answer: Bad Company

"Bad Company" (1974) was the third single from taken from the "Bad Company" (1974) album, but even though it is now remembered as one of the band's better known tracks, it failed to chart anywhere.
Although Bad Company were a British band, it was in North America that they found their greatest success, with six top twenty hits on the Billboard Hot 100 in USA and five top twenty tracks in Canada compared to just two in UK.
Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke first tasted success with Free before forming Bad Company, while Mick Ralphs was formerly the guitarist for Mott The Hoople and Boz Burrell had been a member of King Crimson.
10. Hopefully you have the answers and you're not in dire straits, so which UK top ten hit from 1981 do all the answers provide the lyrics to?

Answer: Romeo And Juliet

Although "Romeo And Juliet" is one of Dire Straits best known and most loved songs, amazingly it was not a major hit when released in 1981, failing to chart anywhere other than UK and Italy.
The lyrics, complete with the songs from the quiz capitalised are;

A love struck Romeo sang the streets of serenade
Laying everybody low with a LOVE SONG that he made
Finds a streetlight, steps out of the shade
Says something like, "YOU AND ME, BABE, how about it?"
Juliet says, "Hey, it's Romeo, you nearly gave me a HEART ATTACK"
He's underneath the window, she's singing, "Hey, la, MY BOYFRIEND'S BACK
You shouldn't come around here singing up at people like that
Anyway, what you gonna do about it?"
"Juliet, the dice was loaded from the start
And I bet, and you exploded into my heart
And I forget, I forget the movie song
When you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?"
Come up on different streets, they both were streets of shame
Both dirty, both mean, yes, and the dream was just the same
And I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real
How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals?
When you can fall for chains of silver you can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the PROMISES they hold
You promised me everything, you promised me thick and thin, yeah
Now you just say "oh, Romeo, yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him"
"Juliet, when we made love, you used to CRY
You said 'I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die'
There's a place for us, you know the movie song
When you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?"
I can't do the talk like they talk on the TV
And I can't do a love song like the way it's meant to be
I can't do everything but I'd do anything for you
I can't do anything except be in love with you
And all I do is MISS YOU and the way we used to be
All I do is keep the beat and BAD COMPANY
All I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme
Julie, I'd do the stars with you any time
"Juliet, when we made love you used to cry
You said 'I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die'
There's a place for us you know the movie song
When you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?"
And a love struck Romeo, he sang the streets of serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
Finds a convenient streetlight, steps out of the shade
He says something like, "You and me, babe, how about it?
You and me, babe, how about it?"
