Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During their theme song to the 1985 James Bond film "A View to a Kill" Duran Duran were urging us to "dance into the fire" so that we may find which mythical bird within this lyric? "A chance to find ____ for the flame"

Answer: The Phoenix

Released by the band in 1985 this proved to be the first James Bond theme song that would reach number one on Billboard's Hot 100 charts. (Note) "Live and Let Die" by Paul McCartney and Wings (1973) got to number one on the Cashbox charts in the US but only reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100.
Legend has it that the band's bass player, John Taylor, in an inebriated state, met the long-time "Bond" producer, "Cubby" Broccoli, at a party and informed him that the themes to his last few films were mediocre at best and that his band would fix it. At the time Broccoli took it "under advisement".

This question was spied out and delivered by Phoenix Rising team member pollucci19.
2. According to the 2014 song written to support downtown Detroit, what "keeps you hanging on through the disbelief, every day, every step, every dream", and "change(s) everything"?

Answer: Hope can

Bart Millard (MercyMe), Francesca Battistelli, Jamie Grace, Jeremy Camp, Sidewalk Prophets, and Matt Maher got together in 2014 to record 'Hope Can Change Everything' written by Justin Ebach and Steven Jones. The purpose of the recording is to support an initiative of the K-LOVE Hope Center, whose aim is to provide hope to the people of Detroit. The initiative is built on the cultivation of Community, Education, Health and Restoration and programs underpinning each of those areas provide opportunities to the people of Detroit to improve their circumstances.

This question was cultivated by Phoenix Rising member VegemiteKid.
3. In 1967 Jimi Hendrix told her to "fly on, little ____" and Neil Young told us in 1980 that "all her friends call her little ____, but she flies rings around them all". Who or what is she?

Answer: Wing

"Little Wing" is one of a number of tracks in which Jimi Hendrix speaks of figures that act as his guardian angels. This simple R&B ballad was recorded in 1967 and was produced with a slower tempo than most Hendrix numbers. It appears on the album "Axis: Bold as Love".

A different "Little Wing" serves as the opening number on Neil Young's disjointed 1980 album "Hawks and Doves". This disc, which was put together by Young in the midst of some family adversities, did not receive much positive feedback from critics. However, it still managed to perform strongly for Neil thanks to the goodwill that he'd built with his previous studio album "Rust Never Sleeps" (1979).

This question flew in from Phoenix Rising team member pollucci19.
4. In Britney Spears' "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman", what will the girl always find?

Answer: Her way

"I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" is the second single off Britney Spears' third studio album, "Britney" (2001). It was recorded for her first movie "Crossroads" (2002). In the song, Britney describes the awkward time period during which she has left her girlhood behind but is not quite ready to enter adulthood yet and how she needs a little time to find her way.

The way to this question was found by Phoenix Rising team member purelyqing.
5. The group America traveled on a horse with no name where?

Answer: Through the desert

"A Horse with No Name" was written by Dewey Bunnell, the lead singer of the band America. It would prove to be the band's most successful single, peaking at Number One on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1972. The single charted in several European countries earlier but had its greatest success in the US. The song propelled America's self-titled debut album to platinum status.

Relevant lyrics:

"I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain"

6. What blue items were "smilin'" at Willie Nelson in 1978? The same things were smilin' at Irving Berlin in 1926, Count Basie and Benny Goodman in 1946, and Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye in 1954?

Answer: Skies

"Blue skies smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies do I see
Blue birds singing a song
Nothing but blue skies from now on"

"Blue Skies" was written in 1926 for the Rodgers and Hart musical "Betsy". It was sung by Belle Baker on this occasion. Benny Goodman and his Orchestra recorded the song in 1935 but it became a hit in 1946, the same year as a hit version for Count Basie. Bing Cosby and Danny Kaye sang the tune in 1954's "White Christmas". Jim Reeves had a hit with a country version in 1962, and Willie Nelson took it a step further in 1978 when he had a number one country hit with this song.

This song was flagged by Phoenix Rising's 1nn1 who has been around only long enough to remember the Nelson version.
7. "Hotel California" by the Eagles in 1976 is probably one of the most analysed songs in rock history. What are the missing lyrics in the following excerpt? "He said, 'We haven't had that spirit here since 1969' ____those voices are calling from far away Wake you up in the middle of the night Just to hear them say..."

Answer: And still

Glen Felder wrote the music which had elements from Latin and reggae music and passed it to Don Henley and Glen Frey (Eagles always wrote the music first). When Mr. Henley heard it, he commented it sounded like a "Mexican reggae song". The group decided to meet one night in Los Angeles to finalise the song. In an interview by Howard Stern with Mr. Felder, the songwriter commented "Nobody was from California, and if you drive into L.A. at night... you can just see this glow on the horizon of lights, and the images that start running through your head of Hollywood and all the dreams that you have, and so it was kind of about that what we started writing the song about."

The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1976.

This question was written with difficulty by 1nn1 whose head grew heavy and sight grew dim at the mere mention of the "warm smell of colitas rising up through the air."
8. Which Idina Menzel song from the musical "Wicked" was released as a pop version in 2007 and reached number five on the US Dance chart?

Answer: Defying Gravity

Idina Menzel played Elphaba in the original cast of "Wicked". She won a Tony for her performance in 2004. After reprising her role as Elphaba in the West End production of "Wicked" at London's Apollo Victoria Theatre in 2006, she released a remixed pop mainstream version of "Defying Gravity" in 2007. This version was included on her "I Stand" album. It was released a second time as a single in 2012 from her album "Live: Barefoot at the Symphony".

This question was created by Phoenix Rising member tazman6619.
9. According to the song found on their 'New World' album, sister-duo Krewella reckon that "money can't buy ___". (Fill in the blank.)

Answer: Fortune

Sisters from Illinois, USA, Yasmine and Jahan Yousef sing together under the name Krewella. "Fortune", which speaks about them having everything they could want, appeared on their 2017 album "New World". Their style is electronic dance music mixed with dance pop/rock. They started out as a trio in 2011, and have performed in music festivals around the world. They have successfully used social media to raise their profile.

This question found its groove through the efforts of Phoenix Rising member VegemiteKid.
10. Johnny Diesel & the Injectors would awaken in 1989 and blame themselves for a love that went wrong. Which word fills the lyric that completes part of their pain? "Words of sorrow and words of ___ Ringing in my head right through the night"

Answer: Spite

"Cry in Shame", released in 1989, is the third single from the eponymous album by Perth (Western Australia) outfit Johnny Diesel and the Injectors. A pared back number written by their front-man Mark Lizotte (a.k.a. Johnny Diesel), the track was a departure from the full-on rockers the band had released for their first singles. The track would peak at ten on the Australian ARIA charts. Two years later Lizotte changed his name to Diesel and embarked on a highly successful solo career.

This question cried out from the pen of Phoenix Rising team member pollucci19.
11. The magic of the relationship has faded and Roxy Music are looking to bring it back to life as evidenced by which word that's missing from the following lyric? "trying to ___ the same old scene"

Answer: Revive

Revival seemed to be the word on the lips of the critics who'd generally panned Roxy Music's 1980 album, "Flesh + Blood", suggesting that the band had run out of ideas. Despite the negative reviews the album performed strongly, hitting the number one spot on the UK album charts in its first week of release. After falling it would return to the top three months later (August) on the back of their outstanding singles "Over You", "Oh Yeah" and "Same Old Scene". Overall the album would spend some sixty weeks in the UK charts.

"Same Old Scene", the third single to be released from the album, would peak at number twelve on the UK Singles chart and feature prominently on the soundtrack to Allan Moyle's (now) cult classic film "Times Square" (1980),

This question was resuscitated by Phoenix Rising team member pollucci19.
12. Using words synonymous with the phoenix, what is the title of this track from Christian metal core band War of Ages? "Fight for the path Unto the forgiveness We honor the vow Leading to imperfection".

Answer: From Ashes

War of Ages began life in 2002 under the name Point Zero, a name under which they released the 2004 EP "Unite Us All". The name changed in 2005 when they released their first, self-titled, full length album. From Pennsylvania, they are known for their strong Christian faith and their motto, according to lead singer Leroy Ham, is to "make a difference in a world that is covered in darkness".

The song "From Ashes" is taken from their seventh studio album "Supreme Chaos", released in 2014.

The question rose from the pen of Phoenix Rising team member pollucci19.
13. Which pop group's most famous hit was "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree"? Tony Orlando ___ Dawn

Answer: And

Tony Orlando and Dawn had a rocky beginning as a group because of Orlando's contractual obligations. Tony Orlando wanted to release the song "Candida" but he could not do it under his own name because of a conflict of interest. It was released under the name Dawn to protect his identity. When it and another song were successful, the need for a live band forced the issue and the group now became known as Dawn featuring Tony Orlando. Eventually the group hit the big time and had their own TV show called "Tony Orlando and Dawn". The group was never known as Tony Orlando featuring Dawn.

"Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree" became a worldwide hit in 1973 for the group. It reach Number One in eight countries - the US, the UK, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Ireland, Norway, and New Zealand.

14. Katy Perry, Skillet, and Danny Gokey each recorded different songs with the same name. What is the one-word title of the songs, a word a baker might use to exhort his goods to great heights?

Answer: Rise

The song "Rise" is on Danny Gokey's fifth album, released in 2017, also called "Rise". He made it to the top three in the eighth season of "American Idol". Skillet's version of the song of that name was written by John Cooper and Scott Christopher Stevens, and has the theme of people rising above the violence and horrors of life to unite to create a better world. Perry recorded her "Rise" song by NBC as their motif for the 2016 Rio Olympics productions, and suggested it was a tribute to the athletes, swimmers, runners, gymnasts, and others who united the world with their efforts.

This question was carefully proved by Phoenix Rising member VegemiteKid.
