Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cliff Richard did not need any bags and baggage to slow him down, so was he "Travellin' _____" in this song?

Answer: Light

"Travellin' Light" was the second UK number one for Cliff Richard, it went to number one in 1959. It did not chart in the US.

Sir Cliff is the only singer to have had a UK number one single in five different decades from the '50s to the '90s. He only has three months left of 2009 to get a number one in this decade. Maybe his new version of the '50s hit "Singing The Blues" with his old backing group The Shadows, will do it. He has had 14 UK number ones altogether. His biggest hit in the US was "Devil Woman in 1976 which got to number six and earned him a gold disc.
2. Did Carole King think "It Might As Well Rain Until _____"?

Answer: September

Carole king had a number 22 hit with "It Might As Well Rain Until September" on the US pop chart in 1962. It reached number three on the UK chart.

Carole King was also a song writer and along with her writing partner Gerry Goffin has given us some of the greatest pop songs of the '60s. "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" by The Shirelles, "Take Good Care Of My Baby" by Bobby Vee, The Loco-Motion by Little Eva" and "One Fine Day" by The Chiffons to name but a few.
3. Was it a "_____", that was the kind of hat Procol Harum sang about?

Answer: Homburg

Procol Harum had a number six hit on the UK chart with "Homburg" in 1967. It reached number 34 on the US chart.

Whatever records Procol Harum have made they would never better and always be remembered for one single, you guessed it, "A Whiter Shade Of Pale". Even if no one knows what it was all about, lol.
4. Would the British R.S.P.B. have something to say to T.Rex if they tried to "Ride A White _____"?

Answer: Swan

"Ride A White Swan" sang T.Rex in 1970. It reached number two on the UK chart but only got to number 76 on the US chart in 1971.

Not many of the artists from the so called Glam-Rock period in the UK in the '70s had a lot of success in the US and T.Rex one of the best of that ilk only had one top ten hit and three minor hits on the US chart. Sweet on the other hand had four US top ten hits but don't ask me how, what do I know.
5. Did Steely Dan catch a big fish with "Reeling In The _____" or was it the one that got away?

Answer: Years

"Reeling In The Years" was a number eleven hit for Steely Dan in 1973 on the US pop chart. It never charted in the UK.

Jazz-rock never really got off the ground in the UK, singles chart wise at least. Steely Dan only had one UK top twenty hit "Haitian Divorce" at number 17 and three other minor hit singles. They did have three top twenty albums on the UK album chart.
6. Was Glen Campbell trying to be a western hero with the "_____ Cowboy"?

Answer: Rhinestone

Glen Campbell had a number one on the US pop chart for two weeks in 1975 with "Rhinestone Cowboy". It reached number four on the UK chart.

In 2002 a version of "Rhinestone Cowboy (Giddy Up Giddy UP)" by Rikki and Daz (production duo John Matthews and Darren Sampson) featuring Glen Campbell reached number 12 on the UK chart.
7. Did they have to take Welsh rocker Shakin' Stevens away after this song "You Drive Me _____"?

Answer: Crazy

"You Drive Me Crazy" gave Shaky a UK number two hit in 1981, it did not chart in the US. Shakin' Stevens (real name, Michael Barratt) was the most successful UK chart performer of the '80s. He had four UK number one hits and 15 top ten hits during the decade. He only had one hit on the US pop chart in 1984 with "Cry Just A Little Bit" at number 67. He had many hits with new versions of old Rock'n'Roll hits from the '50s. Rock On Shaky.

Just a note on the phrase Doo-lally, there are many different spellings and it comes from old British army slang for someone having treatment in the Deolali sanatorium in Maharashtra, India.
8. Who does Deniece Williams want to hear it for in "Let's Hear It For The ____"?

Answer: Boy

Deniece sang "Let's Hear It For The Boy" and had a number one hit on the US pop chart in 1984. It reached number two on the UK chart. The song was from the movie "Footloose" starring Kevin Bacon.

Deniece Williams had a UK nmber one single in 1977 with "Free", it only reached number 25 on the US pop chart. She also had a number one on the US pop chart in 1978 with "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late", a duet with Johnny Mathis. It reached number three on the UK chart.
9. What's that you say Paula Abdul, "The Promise Of A New ____"?

Answer: Day

Paula Abdul sang "The Promise Of A New Day", it gave her a number one hit on the US chart in 1991. It only reached number 52 on the UK chart.

"The Promise Of A New Day" was the sixth US number one for Paula Abdul. She has never had a number one single on the UK chart. Paula had a UK number two hit in 1990 with "Opposites Attract" which was her fourth US number one single.
10. Hey Status Quo, haven't we all had this happen, when we drop something and it lands "_____ Side Down"?

Answer: Jam

Status Quo sang "Jam Side Down" in 2002 and it gave them a number 17 hit on the UK chart, 34 years after their first UK chart hit. It never charted in the US.

Quo have been described as a three cord boogie band among other things but have remained very popular in the UK with one number one and 22 top ten hits since their first UK hit. That was "Pictures Of Matchstick Men" in 1968, which was their first of only two hits on the US chart.
