Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Joni Mitchell, from 1970: "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot"

Answer: Big Yellow Taxi

From the album "Ladies of the Canyon." I *just* found out the real title of this one myself last week, loser that I am -- that was the inspiration for this quiz, in fact. Late in the song, we hear the lyrics "Late last night I heard the screen door slam...and a big yellow taxi took away my old man."
2. The Who, from 1971: "Don't cry...Don't raise your eye...It's only teenage wasteland"

Answer: Baba O'Riley

Allegedly the song was named for "minimalist" innovator Terry Riley. Can any Who fans out there confirm or deny that for me?
3. The Police, 1983: "Many miles away, there's a shadow on the door of a cottage on the shore of a dark Scottish lake...many miles away...many miles away..."

Answer: Synchronicity II

The Police are my favorite band of all time, and "Synchronicity" is probably my favorite of their albums. These are the closing lines of the song "Synchronicity II."
4. Bob Dylan, 1966: "Everybody must get stoned"

Answer: Rainy Day Women #12 and 35

From the album "Blonde On Blonde." Anyone know the significance of the numbers 12 and 35 here? I sure don't.
5. David Bowie, 1969: "Ground Control to Major Tom..."

Answer: Space Oddity

If you answered "Major Tom," you were probably thinking of Peter Schilling's 1982 hit, "Major Tom (Coming Home)." Bowie released "Space Oddity" from his self-titled 1969 album.
6. John Lennon, 1970: "Well, we all shine on...like the moon and the stars and the sun"

Answer: Instant Karma!

My research indicates that this song can be found on 1975's "Shaved Fish," which is labeled as a compilation of Lennon's previous singles, but I'm told by FunTrivia member MUSICWORKS that the single was actually released in 1970. Thanks!
7. Elvis Presley, 1969: "We're caught in a trap...I can't walk out"

Answer: Suspicious Minds

Written by Mark James. One of the few Elvis songs I can honestly say I like [ducking bricks].
8. Billy Joel, 1978: "She can kill with a smile/She can wound with her eyes/And she can ruin your faith with her casual lies"

Answer: She's Always a Woman

From "The Stranger." Billy was one of my favorite musicians during the 70's and early 80's.
9. Supertramp, 1979: "Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned...I know it sounds absurd...but please tell me who I am...who I am...who I am"

Answer: The Logical Song

From 1979's "Breakfast in America," and also featured on the soundtrack of the 1999 motion picture "Magnolia." The title seems to be a reference to this lyric, early in the song: "But then they sent me away to teach me how to be sensible...logical...oh, responsible, practical..."
10. And finally, a question about the title of an album, rather than a song. The Beatles released an album in 1968 with an all-white cover. What was its official title?

Answer: The Beatles

It's frequently referred to as "The White Album," but Apple Records, the Beatles themselves, and music enthusiasts know that its true name is simply "The Beatles."
