Born André Lauren Benjamin, André 3000 is a member of the southern hip hop duo Outkast. He is also an actor who has appeared in television shows such as "Families" and "The Shield." As a record producer, André also produced this song.

Shaw writes in "Just Bought a Cadillac: Hip Hop and Caddy Culture" that the Cadillac "represents the Sunday morning church car for a certain demographic as well as the Sunday afternoon-evening recreational car for another demographic. The Cadillac, perhaps more than any other car, has become a symbol of success, but not just any success - the American Dream, an attainable sort of success."

A big band version of "Hey Ya!" arranged by Scott Bradlee was released In 2015 by Postmodern Jukebox. Sara Niemietz performed lead vocals on the song.

The allusion is in reference to the way people sometimes shake instant Polaroid photographs to get them to develop faster. The first Polaroid camera, the Model 95, went on sale in 1948. Polaroid stopped making instant film cameras in 2007, four years after this song was released.
