According to Rolling Stone magazine, which ranked this song number 36 on its 2021 list of the 500 greatest songs of all time, Jack White once said, "I didn't have lyrics for it until later on, and I was just calling it 'Seven Nation Army' - that's what I called the Salvation Army when I was a kid. So that was just a way for me to remember which [riff] I was talking about."
