Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I was surprised when I learned that this band wrote the theme song from "That Thing You Do!"(1996), which I love. I didn't think that a song that good could have come from the same guys who released "Stacy's Mom" in 2003. Which band wrote both of those songs?

Answer: Fountains of Wayne

Fountains of Wayne was founded by Adam Schlesinger in Mont Clair, New Jersey. The band released two albums in the mid-'90s and then took a hiatus. They came together again in 2001 and released a new album, "Welcome Interstate Managers" in 2003, which spawned the single "Stacy's Mom". The song was used in a Dr. Pepper's commercial in 2005.
2. Which was the first single off of The Tragically Hip's 2006 album "World Container?"

Answer: In View

"World Container" was their 11th full-length studio album. "Lonely End of the Rink" is also from this album; it was released a few months after "In View". I think I'm the only person in Canada who doesn't particularly care for The Hip. In this case, it's almost certainly because their songs are constantly played on the radio.
3. Which boy band gets credit for (or blamed for) the song "MMMBop"?

Answer: Hanson

"MmmBop" was the 1997 so-called breakthrough hit for the three brothers from Tulsa, Oklahoma, off of the album "Middle of Nowhere". The song was actually originally recorded in 1996 and was meant to be a ballad, but was reworked by producers for the album a year later.

The song reached number one on the charts worldwide, but I never much cared for it, or the band for that matter, maybe because I was the biggest Backstreet Boys fan ever!
4. What was the first single released by the 'new' INXS?

Answer: Pretty Vegas

When INXS were looking to reunite in 2004, they needed a new lead singer, since Michael Hutchence had died in 1997. They held a television competition called "Rock Star:INXS" and chose J.D. Fortune, from Toronto, Canada, as their new frontman. "Pretty Vegas" was the first song off of INXS's 11th studio album (the first recorded by Fortune) called "Switch", recorded in 2005.
5. Which of the following songs was recorded by Jersey, a punk band from Burlington, Ontario?

Answer: Generation Genocide

Jersey formed in 1996 and was signed to a small Ontario record label called Raw Energy, then Fueled by Ramen (a bigger American record company), and then finally Virgin Records in 2003. The band broke up in 2005. "Generation Genoicide" comes from the 2003 album of the same name. I once received a free demo of this song when I saw Jersey open for Sum 41 in the summer of 2003. Once Jersey took the stage, I figured out why they were giving away free CDs.
6. Which band released a cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" in 2004?

Answer: A Perfect Circle

It was on their album "eMOTIVe"(2004). In my opinion, there are some songs that should just not be touched (or butchered).
7. The following lyrics come from which Sam Roberts song: "Everyone saying that it's wrong to cheat, but there's no other way to get your life on easy street"?

Answer: Brother Down

This song was on both Sam Roberts' 2000 album "Brother Down" and 2002's "The Inhuman Condition EP". The version on the 2002 EP was Roberts' breakthrough hit in Canada. The other songs listed in this question are also by Sam Roberts. I don't really like them either.
8. What was Coldplay's first top ten single on the UK Singles Chart?

Answer: Yellow

"Yellow" was on the 2000 album "Parachutes". It was number four on the UK Singles Chart, and reached number 48 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song won two Grammys in 2002, for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group. The reason that only the lead singer, Chris Martin, appeared in the music video for "Yellow" was because drummer Will Champion's mother's funeral was held on the same day as the video was shot, so the rest of the band went to the funeral.
9. Which artist(s) affiliated with the Church of Scientology released a song called "Nausea" in 2006?

Answer: Beck

Well, he certainly got the title right! The song comes from his 2006 album "The Information" and reached number 13 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart.

Beck has been involved with Scientology most of his life and publicly acknowledged this fact in an "New York Times" magazine interview in 2005.
10. Which song do these lyrics come from: "Why you wanna tell me how to live my life? Who are you to tell me if it's black or white?" ?

Answer: Have A Nice Day

This was a Bon Jovi song. "Have A Nice Day" was the first single released off of the 2005 album of the same name. To me, it sounds exactly the same as every other song Bon Jovi has released this decade, such as "It's My Life" (2000).
