Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This song by the Beatles is sung by George Harrison. What is it?

Answer: While my Guitar Gently Weeps

The Beatles released the "White Album" in 1968. It was a double album, so it had all kinds of different songs on it, and it had songs sung by all four members of the group. George Harrison wrote and sang the song "While my Guitar Gently Weeps," after returning home from India where he had been studying Transcendental Meditation.

"While my Guitar Gently Weeps" has become a popular song on classic rock radio. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked it 136th on their list of "500 Greatest Song of All-time."
2. KISS's highest-charting single on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 was sung by drummer Peter Criss. What was the song?

Answer: Beth

KISS had been highly regarded as a live band since they began in 1973, but their studio albums weren't selling until radio stations decided to play the B-side to the "Detroit Rock City" single. This B-side was "Beth," a song that Paul Stanley thought was a "throwaway," as he said in KISS's "X-Treme Close-up" DVD. Stanley turned out to be wrong. "Beth" charted at number seven on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and won a People's Choice Award.
3. This Pink Floyd song, sung by guitarist David Gilmour, is about Syd Barrett, the band's original lead singer and songwriter. What is it?

Answer: Wish You Were Here

Syd Barrett was the main creative force behind Pink Floyd's debut album, "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn." He left the band shortly after that. Pink Floyd rose to levels of fame that very few other rock musicians have ever experienced, selling over 250 million albums worldwide and releasing some of the most highest-selling and critically acclaimed albums of all-time such as "The Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall." However, that didn't make David Gilmour's life complete.

He still missed his old friend. So he wrote and sang the song "Wish You Were Here," which became the title song from their highly successful 1975 album.

This album is often overlooked compared to the other two aforementioned albums, but it has sold over 13 million copies worldwide. Gilmour and keyboardist Richard Wright say that it's their favorite album.
4. This song by the Who on their "Who's Next" album is sung by bassist John Entwhistle. What is it?

Answer: My Wife

The Who's normal lead singer is Roger Daltrey, but "My Wife" is written and sung by John Entwhistle. It's a song about a man who's been out drinking and gone for a long time, and he fears that his wife will leave him thinking he's with another woman. Guitarist Pete Townsend said that he thought this was the best song on "Who's Next," better than the three wrong answers which are all commonly played songs on classic rock radio.
5. This song by Styx on "The Grand Illusion" is sung by James Young. What is it?

Answer: Miss America

Styx's normal lead singers were Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw, but James Young always sang at least one song on every album. His most popular song is "Miss America," which criticizes the Miss America pageant and basically says that being Miss America isn't as great as it seems.
6. This ZZ Top song is sung by bassist Dusty Hill. What is it?

Answer: Tush

"Tush" is ZZ Top's usual concert closer. The interesting thing about the song as that "Tush" is pronounced to rhyme with "Rush," when the word normally rhymes with "Bush." This is presumably so that it will come close to rhyming with "Much," the word that ends the previous sentence in the chorus. "Tush" charted at number 20 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

It's baffling to me that Hill does not sing more songs. I think he has a better singing voice than Billy Gibbons.
7. Blue Oyster Cult's two biggest hits were sung by whom?

Answer: Donald Roeser

Blue Oyster Cult's normal lead singer is Eric Bloom. However, their two biggest hits, "Don't Fear the Reaper" and "Burnin' For You," were sung by guitarist Donald Roeser. Those are the only two Blue Oyster Cult songs to ever chart in the top 40 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
8. This Eagles song was sung by bassist Randy Meisner. What is it?

Answer: Take it to the Limit

"Take it to the Limit" began as a Meisner solo song. Don Henley and Glenn Frey helped complete it, but Meisner sang it. The song charted in the top five on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. After Meisner's departure from the band shortly after this song was released, Frey started singing it at the concerts.
9. Drummer Don Brewer of this band told everybody that "We're an American Band." What's the band?

Answer: Grand Funk Railroad

Oddly, this song hit number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on lead singer Mark Farner's birthday. However Farner did not sing this song. Brewer did. It's a song about the band's touring life. It mentions playing poker with blues musician Freddie King, traveling through Little Rock Arkansas, groupies such as "Sweet sweet Connie," and a fictional argument between Brewer and Humble Pie.
10. Heart's first number one single on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 wasn't sung by lead singer Ann Wilson, it was sung by her sister Nancy. What was it?

Answer: These Dreams

"These Dreams" was written by two men, Martin Page and Bernie Taupin. It was originally offered to Stevie Nicks, but she turned it down, so Heart recorded it. Heart started off as a hard rock band known for their legendary guitar riff in "Barracuda," but in the 80s they transitioned into a power pop band doing power ballads.

Interestingly, Nancy was sick when she sang this song. If it is noticeable, it certainly didn't matter to listeners. When it became a hit, the producers asked Nancy "Can't you just get sick again?" wanting her to be able to sing the song at live shows the same way she sang it on the album.
