Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Kiss Me"
Answer: Sixpence None the Richer
A top ten hit worldwide, "Kiss Me" was released as a single by US pop rock band Sixpence None the Richer in 1998 from their self-titled third studio album. We hear the song after Catherine has given Janey a makeover, and Janey makes her "first slow-motion entrance" down the stairs, however her composed demeanour is soon shattered, as the stairs give way as she crashes down into the basement.
2. "Let's Go"
Answer: The Cars
US rock band "The Cars" were originally active between 1976 and 1988, before reforming in 2010. Their 1979 single "Let's Go" is used in the movie as Mitch, Ox, and Bruce, make the rather short car journey to the house next door but one to go to "their first high school party" at Preston Wasserstein's.
3. "Message of Love"
Answer: Saliva
"Message of Love" was written by Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, and was originally released by The Pretenders in 1981. The Saliva version plays as we follow Jake, Janey, and Catherine into Preston Wasserstein's party. Most of the other main characters from the movie are also at the party, and we are treated to another glamorous entrance by Amanda Becker, which causes the partygoers to freeze in position. On being asked "What's going on" by a clearly unknowing guest, the high school tour guide that we met at the start of the movie informs him (and us) through pursed lips that "We can't talk until she starts moving again".
4. "Pacific Coast Party"
Answer: Smash Mouth
US rock band Smash Mouth released "Pacific Coast Party" in 2001 as the third single from their self-titled third studio album. The music being played during the house party scene transitions from "Message of Love" to "Pacific Coast Party" as Malik (played by Deon Richmond) enquires why another guest (played by Sean Patrick Thomas) is at the party, as, in his words, Malik is "supposed to be the only black guy at this party".
5. "99 Red Balloons"
Answer: Goldfinger
Written by Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen and Carlo Karges, the track originally entitled "99 Luftballons" was released as a single by German band Nena in 1983. Kevin McAlea rewrote the track with English lyrics, and the single was re-released as "99 Red Balloons" in 1984.
The cover by US punk rock band Goldfinger plays during the football game between the John Hughes Wasps and the North Compton Wildcats.
6. "The Metro"
Answer: System of a Down
Written by John Crawford and originally released in 1981 by his band Berlin, "The Metro" has been covered by a number of other artists, including System of a Down, who actually recorded three versions of the song! It is their third cover version that appears in the movie during the football game where, having received his penultimate concussion, a partially conscious Reggie Ray (played by Ron Lester) is being physically supported by two of his teammates, as his coach (played by Ed Lauter) demands that Reggie Ray stays in the game.
7. "My Hero"
Answer: Foo Fighters
"My Hero" was released in 1998 as the third single from the Foo Fighters' second studio album "The Colour and the Shape". After much of his team is injured by some over-aggressive sideline tackling by the opposing team, coach reluctantly requests that Jake gets himself onto the field as he is "the only Quarterback I've got left".
After being given a pep-talk by 'the wise janitor' (played by Mr T), Jake heads confidently out on to the field with "My Hero" expectantly playing in the background. This expectation is soon shown to be unfounded, however, as Jake throws, to use the commentator's words, "the worst pass I've ever seen ... ever", thereby costing the Wasps the game.
8. "If You Leave"
Answer: Good Charlotte
"If You Leave" was originally recorded by British synthpop group Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (commonly referred to as OMD) in 1986. US pop-punk band Good Charlotte appear as the live band at the prom in the movie, and we see them play three songs, starting with their cover of "If You Leave", followed by their versions of "I Want Candy" by the Strangeloves, and "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" by Paul Anka.
9. "Somebody's Baby"
Answer: Phantom Planet
"Somebody's Baby" was originally recorded by US singer-songwriter Jackson Browne in 1982 for the soundtrack to the movie "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". The Phantom Planet cover plays in "Not Another Teen Movie" as Jake and Ricky leave the prom and race to get to Janey first so they can declare their love for her.
10. "Bizarre Love Triangle"
Answer: Stabbing Westward
Originally recorded by English rock band New Order in 1986, "Bizarre Love Triangle" was covered by US rock band for "Not Another Teen Movie". It plays during the second part of Jake and Ricky's race to get to Janey, which leads them both (albeit via somewhat different "methods") to Los Angeles International Airport, where Jake finally gets his girl!
