Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I Melt with You"
Answer: Mest
Originally released in 1982 by British new wave band Modern English, "I Melt with You" was covered by US pop punk band Mest in 2001. The song plays as the opening scene ends, the movie title is displayed, and we see the high school tour guide explaining that "At John Hughes, there are no cliques, no exclusive social groups. You're accepted for who you are, not who you hang out with" then immediately arranging the tour group into stereotypical groups! The song also plays right at the end of the movie when Jake persuades Janey not to get on the plane to Paris and the pair engage in a passionate embrace, and then continues to play into the first part of the end credits.
2. "Line Up"
Answer: Elastica
Fronted by Justine Frischmann, Elastica were an English alternative rock band that were active between 1992 and 2001. Their 1994 single "Line Up" is heard as we see the male lead of the movie, Jake Wyler (played by Chris Evans) pull up to his reserved parking space (which advises us that he is "the most popular boy in school") in his red Ferrari, step out of the car, and proceed to walk proudly through the school corridor amidst the admiration of the other students.
3. "In Between Days"
Answer: Face To Face
Written by The Cure's Robert Smith, and originally released as a single by The Cure in 1985, "In Between Days" was covered by US alternative punk band Face To Face in 1997. The song plays as 'the obsessed best friend' character Ricky (played by Eric Jungmann) walks down the corridor and gives the female lead of the movie, 'the pretty ugly girl' Janey (played by Chyler Leigh) a mix tape ... which Janey immediately puts into her locker along with the dozens of others that Ricky has clearly previously made for her!
4. "Can't Fight This Feeling"
Answer: REO Speedwagon
"Can't Fight This Feeling" was the second single to be released from REO Speedwagon's eleventh studio album "Wheels Are Turnin'" in 1984. The song is used a number of times in the movie, and plays whenever the beautiful Amanda Becker (played by Lacey Chabert) makes a glamorous entrance.
5. "Tainted Love"
Answer: Marilyn Manson
"Tainted Love" was written by Ed Cobb, and originally recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964, however it is probably Soft Cell's 1981 version of the song that is the best known. Marilyn Manson recorded a cover in 2001, and it is this version that plays as we are introduced to 'the cruelest girl in high school' Catherine (played by Mia Kirshner), who we later find out is Jake's sister.
6. "Yoo Hoo"
Answer: Imperial Teen
"Yoo Hoo" appears on the second album from US indie pop group Imperial Teen, entitled "What Is Not to Love". The song plays as we are introduced to 'the nasty cheerleader' Priscilla (played by Jaime Pressly) and her two sidekicks who always appear to be by her side.
She advises Jake that she needs some "T-to-the-fourth-power-Y", which she then explains is some "Time to talk to you", and we see her break up with him in the very next scene.
7. "Rebel Girl"
Answer: Bikini Kill
American punk rock band Bikini Kill were active between 1990 and 1997, and consisted of members Kathleen Hanna (vocals), Billy Karren (guitar), Kathi Wilcox (bass), and Tobi Vail (drums). Their 1993 song "Rebel Girl" plays as we see Janey enthusiastically yet erratically producing her latest "masterpiece" in art class, before being summoned to the principal's office to show the foreign exchange student Areola (played by Cerina Vincent) to her first class.
8. "Rock Star"
Answer: Everclear
"Rock Star" was the second single to be released from US rock band Everclear's fifth studio album "Songs from an American Movie Vol. Two: Good Time for a Bad Attitude". It plays during a flashback when we see Jake remembering when he threw an unnecessary pass to 'wimpy kid' Marty (played by Ean Mering) during a football game that the team already had in the bag.
The pass resulted in a touchdown, but it also resulted in Marty being torn in two by a "top and bottom" tackle by two defensive players.
9. "Don't You (Forget About Me)"
Answer: Sprung Monkey
Originally recorded by Simple Minds in 1985, it is the Sprung Monkey cover version that is played a couple of times in the movie. We first hear it at the end of the detention scene (a direct parody of "The Breakfast Club") as Richard Vernon (played by Paul Gleason) walks out of the library, having just given Mitch (Cody McMains), Ox (Sam Huntington) and Bruce (Samm Levine) a handful more detentions for insubordination.
The song is also played during the end credits of the movie.
10. "Oh Yeah"
Answer: Yello
Swiss electronic band Yello are probably best known for their 1985 single "Oh Yeah", which has also featured in other movies including "Ferris Bueller's Day Off". We hear it in "Not Another Teen Movie" as we see Preston Wasserstein (played by Rob Benedict) reassuring his parents that he won't be having a party as they leave the house (presumably going away for a few days), despite a couple of guys blatantly walking past carrying a beer barrel declaring "Keg coming through!", and another couple of guys wheeling some massive speakers and asking "Where do you want these speakers set up Preston?".
