quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Stereophonics were formed in 1992 and have released a stream of great songs in the decades since. Which UK country do they come from?

Answer: Wales

The lead singer of the Stereophonics grew up on the same street as the band's original drummer, Stuart Cable, in the village of Cwmaman in Wales, and the two founded the band which would become known as the Stereophonics. In 2010, Cable sadly passed away at the age of 40, but the band continued in spite the loss of their friend.
2. The unique, husky-voice of the Stereophonics is provided by their humorous frontman. What is his name?

Answer: Kelly

Kelly Jones is the lead singer and co-founder of the Stereophonics. Though Kelly's voice is undeniably unique, he can perhaps most closely be compared to the "whiskey" tones of Rod Stewart, with whom he has performed. As well as being a gifted singer, Kelly also plays the guitar and is an all-round charming guy, as comes across in his many interviews.
3. Between 1999 and 2007, the Stereophonics achieved no less than five consecutive number one albums in the UK album charts. Which of these was not one of these brilliant albums?

Answer: Definitely Maybe

The Stereophonics debut album, "Word Gets Around", was released in 1997. Their second album in 1999 - "Performance and Cocktails" - kicked off an incredible run in the UK album charts when it shot to the number one spot. It was followed by "Just Enough Education to Perform" (2001), "You Gotta Go There to Come Back" (2003), "Language. Sex. Violence.

Other?" (2005), and "Pull the Pin" (2007).
4. The Stereophonics are well-known for their incredible live performances and one stand-out performance was in the BBC Live Lounge, where they performed in a local pub. One track in particular which shows of their talent shares its name with two US states. Which track is this?

Answer: Dakota

"Dakota" was the first track released from the Stereophonics' fifth studio album, "Language. Sex. Violence. Other?" and was the band's first UK number 1 single. The word "Dakota" does not appear in the song's lyrics, but was chosen as the song title as Kelly Jones wrote the lyrics whilst in Vermillion, South Dakota.

The song was originally called "Vermillion", but was changed after Slipknot released a song with the same title. The performance of "Dakota" on the BBC Live Lounge can be found on YouTube and is really worth a listen.
5. Another of the Stereophonics' most memorable songs is "Handbags and Gladrags". For which famous British comedy series was this track used as the opening theme?

Answer: The Office

"The Office" is a British sitcom that was created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant and which ran over two series. The awkward and novel comedic style of the show made it a (gradual) success and a US version was made starring Steve Carell. Ricky Gervais played David Brent in the UK series - an unlikeable and self-assured office manager.
6. In the Stereophonics' 1999 track "Just Looking", what do the band say that they are not doing?

Answer: Buying

"I'm just looking, I'm not buying" is the best known of line of this track, which was released in 1999 and was part of the Stereophonics' second studio album (and the first of the big five to reach number one in the album charts), "Performance and Cocktails". The track itself reached number four in the UK singles charts.
7. The brilliant live performances of the Stereophonics earned them the chance to headline this famous music festival in 2002. Which festival was this?

Answer: Glastonbury

The Stereophonics headlined Glastonbury in 2002, alongside Coldplay (who also headlined in 2005 and 2011) and Rod Stewart. Their performance was long anticipated, not least because Glastonbury had not been held the previous year in part to revise some of their procedures to try and make the event more safe, in the light of several deaths at a Danish music festival the year before.
8. In 2013, the Stereophonics released their eighth studio album, the title of which was inspired by the lead singer's experience of having vandals run across the roof of his house. What is this album called?

Answer: Graffiti on the Train

Whilst in his home, lead singer Kelly Jones heard footsteps on his roof. Thinking that someone was trying to burgle his house, he stuck his head out one night to question the children who were running across his roof. He found that they were not planning to burgle him, but instead were using his roof to get to the train tracks so they could vandalise the train.

This event gave Kelly the title for the band's eighth album.
9. Which Stereophonics single, taken from their 2013 album, shares its name with a period of unseasonable warmth?

Answer: Indian Summer

This track was part of the album "Graffiti on the Train". The track describes a fleeting relationship with a woman who broke the coldness of September with her warmth and excitement. The swiftness of the relationship is highlighted shortly after by reference to the "rain of November", which was "the time that we ended".
10. As my final question, I will leave it to the Stereophonics to bid you adieu. Which of these is a Stereophonics song title?

Answer: Have a Nice Day

"Have a Nice" day was the second track released as part of the Stereophonics' third studio album, "Just Enough Education to Perform". This number one album also featured "Mr. Writer", which, like "Have a Nice Day", reached number five in the UK charts, as well as the famous "Handbags and Gladrags".
