Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where should you meet the man who is telling you of your mission (let's call him Al)?

Answer: Underneath the clock at the station

"Meet me at the station underneath the clock"

Every train station should have an accurate clock, if only to ensure that the trains run on time.

In June of 2018, an anonymous person returned a clock to a defunct train station in Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. The clock had been stolen 20 years earlier.
2. What should you be carrying when you arrive at the train station?

Answer: An umbrella

"Carry an umbrella, no need to talk"

Many people believe that "bumbershoot", a synonym for umbrella, is a word of British origin. However, according to an interesting article published in the online magazine "Slate" (Yagoda, Ben. "Cheerio, Bumbershoot!" Nov. 4, 2011), the word originated in the United States of America.
3. A man will be hiding in the fog and watching. What kind of hat will he be wearing?

Answer: A homburg

"The man in the homburg, hiding in the fog / Will be watching"

Similar to a fedora, the homburg is a semi-formal felt hat. It was popularized by Britain's King Edward VII, who purchased one in Germany. Many people have worn homburgs, from Orthodox Jewish rabbis to Dwight D. Eisenhower to Al Pacino's character in "The Godfather".
4. What time should you walk through the gate?

Answer: 7:45 precisely

"Get yourself a ticket, go through the gate / At seven forty-five precisely, don't be late"

Apparently, timing is of the essence. I do hope that you're a punctual person! If not, I am afraid things do not bode well for you with this mission.
5. What should you do if someone follows you through the gate?

Answer: Keep on walking

"If anybody follows don't hesitate / Keep on walking"

Apparently, drawing attention to yourself would be a bad idea.
6. Where should you spend the first 30 minutes after you board the train?

Answer: In the restaurant car

"After half an hour in the restaurant car", you will meet your next contact.

Restaurant cars are known in the United States of America as dining cars. As you might surmise, they are where the meals are served aboard the train.
7. Who is the first person you'll seek out on the train?

Answer: The conductor

"Look for the conductor"

The conductor, also known as the train guard, has many responsibilities, including taking tickets, filling out paperwork, and ensuring the safety of passengers.
8. What clothing will the conductor be wearing?

Answer: A stained tunic

"And there will be a stain on his tunic"

Oh my! This mission is starting to sound pretty creepy. I hope the stain isn't blood.
9. What will the conductor give you?

Answer: A newspaper

"A paper underneath his arm / Then you'd better pray that he doesn't look away/ Or you'll never, never, never come back"

Oh no! How can you control whether or not the conductor looks away? This whole thing sounds really dicey.

"The Munich Eye" is an English-language newspaper printed in Munich, Germany. Perhaps that is the paper he'll give you.
10. When you open the newspaper, to which page should you turn?

Answer: Page 27

"When you get the paper take a look inside / On page twenty-seven there's a photo of a bride"

"The Bridal Chorus", also known as "Here Comes the Bride", was originally written by Richard Wagner for the tragic opera "Lohengrin". Things do not end well for the bride. I hope that you will have better luck.
11. Which newspaper article should you memorize?

Answer: The story of a man who died in Morocco

"Underneath the story of a man who died in Morocco / Memorize the article word for word"

I hope that you have a photographic memory!

Morocco is a country in northwestern Africa. Its largest city is Casablanca; however, the capital of Morocco is Rabat.
12. Who understands the code?

Answer: The man in the homburg

"The man in the homburg understands the code / Make sure the conversation isn't overheard / They're around you"

Oh dear! Who are "they" and how can you tell if they're listening in? This sounds ominous!
13. Why, according to Al, is he asking you to take on this assignment?

Answer: There's nobody else, and the bad guys don't know your face.

"I really wouldn't ask if there was anybody else / But I know you've got the knack of taking care of yourself / And they don't know your face so there won't be anyone / Looking for you"

Or maybe Al just wants you dead. This mission sounds way too dangerous to me.
14. Where will the people be waiting for you in Munich?

Answer: In the car

"When you get to Munich we'll be waiting in the car / Don't look around, just walk straight out"

I hope that there aren't too many cars there! This could go wrong in so many ways.
15. If you don't show, what will happen?

Answer: Al will be sorry for the pain he caused you.

"If you don't show, I'm sorry for the pain / I caused you"

We never learn what else might happen.

"Night Train to Munich" by Al Stewart was released in 1995 on his album "Between the Wars".
