Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ah, the drama! What is "spirit gum"?

Answer: A substance that actors use to attach false features to the face

As a high school "drama nerd", I became quite familiar with spirit gum. It's a useful substance when attaching false noses, beards, wigs, and other disguises that help the audience suspend disbelief during a performance.
2. Spirit was the name of an American rock band whose heyday was the 1970s. Although several of the band members are now dead, the band was in the news in 2016 (not long before this quiz was written). Why?

Answer: Led Zeppelin was on trial for stealing part of one of Spirit's songs.

Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin were accused of plagiarism, as the guitar part of Led Zeppelin's 1971 song "Stairway to Heaven" was deemed similar to Spirit's 1967 song "Taurus". In 2016, the case, filed by the estate of the late guitarist Randy California (real name Randy Wolfe), went to trial. The jury ruled in favor of Led Zeppelin.
3. Spirit Airlines is an American airline known for what?

Answer: Extremely low basic fares

Apparently, this airline keeps costs low by charging an extremely low basic fare and adding on costs for every extra thing. Want your boarding pass printed out for you? There's a charge for that. Want to choose your seat? There's a charge for that, too. Think you can save yourself a charge by bringing a large carry-on bag? Wrong; there's a charge for that, too!
4. Which of the following would NOT typically be considered a spirit?

Answer: beer

Generally, spirits are distilled and contain at least 20% alcohol. Beer is brewed and typically has a lower alcohol content, so it would not be considered a spirit.
5. In "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by a total of four ghosts. Which one visits him first?

Answer: Marley's ghost

Jacob Marley, Scrooge's late business partner, appears to Scrooge to warn him of his future fate, should Scrooge not change his ways.
6. If your spirit animal is a raven, what qualities does it represent, according to Northwest Coastal Native American lore?

Answer: life change, creativity, humor

In Northwest Coastal Native American cultures, such as the Haida, spirit, or totem, animals provide guidance. The raven, a trickster, is symbolic of life change, creativity, and humor. Work ethics, protection, and harmony are characteristics of the beaver; strength, humility, and teaching are characteristics of the bear; persistence, prosperity, and renewal are characteristics of the salmon.
7. The 2001 movie "Spirited Away" would most aptly be described as which of the following?

Answer: Japanese animated fantasy comedy-drama mystery

The main character of "Spirited Away", a highly acclaimed family film, is a ten-year-old girl who enters the spirit world and becomes trapped there.
8. The Spirit of St. Louis was flown by which famous aviator?

Answer: Charles Lindbergh

Charles Lindbergh flew the Spirit of St. Louis from New York to Paris on May 20-21, 1927 -- a flight that went down in history as the first solo nonstop transatlantic flight. Although I was born several decades after this flight occurred, I was fortunate to see this beautiful custom-built monoplane in its current home: the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
9. Which of these "spirited" songs was a hit for Norman Greenbaum in 1969?

Answer: "Spirit in the Sky"

Greenbaum, an observant Jew, had a big hit with the Christian-themed "Spirit in the Sky". As for the other songs, "Spirit of the Radio" was by Rush, "Spirits in the Night" by Bruce Springsteen, and "Spirits in the Material World" by the Police.
10. As you may have noticed, "spirit" has a number of different meanings. Which word below is NOT a synonym of a definition of "spirit"?

Answer: corporal

"Spirit" is another name for ghost, as is "apparition". It can also refer to vigor or energy (brio), as well as to distilled liquor (firewater). "Corporal", or related to the body, is often used as an antonym for "spiritual".
