Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cryptopsy are often considered to be a driving force behind early technical death metal in the 1990s. Their vocalist, Dan Greening, is well-known in the death metal scene for his intense vocal style. But by what pseudonym was he more commonly known?

Answer: Lord Worm

He was known as Lord Worm because of his habit of eating live worms from a goblet on stage, and sometimes offering them to members of the audience. He was also famed among death metal fans for holding a 28-second scream in the song "Open Face Surgery". He has since left Cryptopsy.
2. Which of the following technical death metal bands is NOT from Italy?

Answer: Spawn of Possession

Spawn of Possession are from Sweden, with one member from Germany.
3. This technical death metal band was well known for the young age of the members at the time of their first album's release in 1999. The drummer, known as "Vitek", was the youngest in the band, aged 15 at the time of recording. To what band am I referring?

Answer: Decapitated

Decapitated released "Winds of Creation" when Vitek was 15. Vitek's real name is Witold Kieltyka. He sadly died in a tour bus crash in 2007.
4. Chuck Schuldiner was known as the "Godfather of Death Metal" or the "Father of Death Metal". He was the frontman of the band Death, who are widely considered the first death metal band. However, what band did Schuldiner form and release an album with prior to his death in 2001?

Answer: Control Denied

Control Denied released "The Fragile Art of Existence" in 1999, a year after Death's last ever album. Control Denied started recording for an album called "When Man and Machine Collide", although this was put on halt after Chuck died. Members have expressed wishes to finish recording the album.
5. Cattle Decapitation are an unusual-sounding technical death metal band from San Diego, California. What consistent lyrical theme is present in most of their material?

Answer: Vegetarianism

The band's name is a misnomer, meaning that the band name is intentionally misleading. Another technical death metal band with a misleading name is the Florida-based band Dying Fetus, whose lyrics are often musings on the justice system or morality, or even about how death metal is misrepresented by the media.
6. Fleshgod Apocalypse are an Italian band with heavy classical influences. In 2011, they released an album entitled "Agony", in which the most prominent melodic instrument was an orchestral string section. But the titles of the songs on the album (except for the first and the last) are all... what?

Answer: Titled "The (some word)".

The songs are (in order): "Temptation", "The Hypocrisy", "The Imposition", "The Deceit", "The Violation", "The Egoism", "The Betrayal", "The Forsaking", "The Oppression", and "Agony".
7. Which of the following technical death metal bands only released one album before disbanding?

Answer: Demilich

Demilich released "Nespithe" in 1993, which is often considered to be a heavily contributing factor to the development of technical death metal, which at the time could barely constitute as a genre. "Nespithe" is an anagram of "The Spine", and the instrumental song of the album (titled "Erecshyrinol") is an anagram of "No Lyrics Here".
8. Pitbulls in the Nursery are a technical death metal band from France. On their debut album "Lunatic", they often cut away from death metal for a few measures to play what other genre?

Answer: Avant-Garde Jazz

Many technical death metal bands utilize outside influences while still playing death metal. Pitbulls in the Nursersy, however, often utilize these influences in short bursts, separately.
9. Which of these technical death metal songs does not start with a spoken/otherwise vocal sample (a small sound bite before the song itself)? Note: The songs here are listed as "Band Name - Song Name"

Answer: Hour of Penance - "The Cannibal Gods"

The Cryptopsy and Dying Fetus samples are both short spoken sentences. The Cattle Decapitation sample is a warbling scream. "The Cannibal Gods" has no sample at the start, although around the middle of the song, a single strike of a church bell can be heard.
10. Which of these technical death metal bands uses the highest guitar tuning normally?

Answer: Cattle Decapitation

Cattle Decapitation usually use D# Standard (one semitone below standard guitar tuning). Death and Obscura both use D Standard. Cryptopsy has the lowest tuning of the bunch, playing in B Standard (5 semitones below standard guitar tuning).
